T wo decades ago, David Mangelsdorf did not expect his basic research findings to help launch an entire field of biology with farreaching implications for a raft of human diseases, including cancer, metabolic disorders, and parasitic infections. Mangelsdorf, a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and a professor of pharmacology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at D...
David maps are generalizations of classical planar quasiconformal maps for which the dilatation is allowed to tend to infinity in a controlled fashion. In this note we examine how these maps distort Hausdorff dimension. We show: – Given α and β in [0, 2] , there exists a David map φ: C → C and a compact set Λ such that dimH Λ = α and dimH φ(Λ) = β . – There exists a David map φ: C → C such that...
David T. Yue David Tuckchow Yue, a renowned biophysicist who dedicated his life to the study of voltage-gated calcium (CaV) channels, passed away suddenly on December 23, 2014 from cardiac arrest. David was a passionate, dedicated, and brilliant scientist who pursued fundamental mechanistic understanding of CaV channel regulation with quantitative rigor, child-like wonder, and remarkable creati...
I’ve never had a response to a column quite like that to Keeping Older Doctors in the Job. As well as several public rapid responses, including an inspirational paean to rural general practice from Dr James Douglas, I received over 100 private emails. I calculate the median respondent’s age as 68. Others replied on Twitter to #olderdoctors. My respondents weren’t a scientifically constructed sa...
As a young doctoral candidate at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, David M. Sabatini was allowed to choose his own research project for his thesis. He chose to investigate the molecular mechanism of rapamycin, a compound with antifungal, antitumor, and immunosuppressant properties. The decision was pivotal, because Sabatini went on to discover the mechanistic target of rapamycin ...

tion after completing his dissertation in 1972 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (MIT AI Lab). That dissertation created the field of constraint propagation by showing that constraints and a rich but simple descriptive system were sufficient to recover threedimensional information from a two-dimensional projection. Besides an education, Dave picked ...
In this paper we introduce a slightly stronger form of countable dense homogeneity that for Polish spaces can be characterized topologically in a natural way. Along the way, we generalize theorems obtained by Bennett and Ungar on countable dense homogeneity.
Let P be a set of n points in R3, not all of which are in a plane and no three on a line. We partially answer a question of Scott (1970) by showing that the connecting lines of P assume at least 2n− 3 different directions if n is even and at least 2n − 2 if n is odd. These bounds are sharp. The proof is based on a far-reaching generalization of Ungar’s theorem concerning the analogous problem i...
