The properties of the interfacial water monolayer on MgO(001) during growth of multilayer ice and, in particular, the dewetting of crystalline ice on MgO(001) are revealed by vibrational sum frequency generation and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy.

Lanthanum hexaboride nanowires produced by chemical vapor deposition are single-crystalline and grown along the [111] direction. Streaks appearing in the electron diffraction spots indicate the lateral direction perpendicular to the nanowire growth axis.

The growth of nanometer-size free Ag clusters is studied by Molecular Dynamics simulations. The morphology transition from the icosahedron at the magic size of N = 55 atoms to the Marks truncated decahedron at N = 75 is analyzed in details, in order to single out kinetic trapping and entropic effects. At very low T , the cluster is kinetically trapped in an icosahedral structure. At intermediat...

Crystalline boron nanowires were grown on Pt coated sapphire substrates using pulsed laser ablation at different temperatures under a pressure of 50 Pa. High-resolution TEM and transmission electron diffraction (TED) analyses were performed to determine the crystal structure of these nanowires. These nanowires had diameters ~100 nm and lengths in the micrometer range. Systematic analyses showed...

Thin SiO₂ films were grown on a Ru(0001) single crystal and studied by photoelectron spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy and scanning probe microscopy. The experimental results in combination with density functional theory calculations provide compelling evidence for the formation of crystalline, double-layer sheet silica weakly bound to a metal substrate.

Epitaxial ZnO thin films were grown on single crystalline Au microplates from an aqueous solution at 90 °C. The composite structures were approximately 100 μm wide. The epitaxial ZnO films were smooth, continuous, and several micrometers thick. We examined the epitaxial relationship between the ZnO and Au through scanning electron microscopy, electron backscatter diffraction, high-resolution tr...

Here we report Si nanowire growth by electrochemical reduction of nanometre silica in molten CaCl2; to our knowledge, this is the first report of an electrochemical route that provides crystalline Si nanowires in large quantities.

The low temperature growth of crystalline PbS films has been achieved on plastic substrates by CVD using a xanthate. The possible mechanism involved in this low temperature deposition has been probed by density functional theory calculations.

A general class of anisotropic multi-phase-eld models is proposed to describe the motion of multiple interfaces that may intersect at multiple junctions. The model reduces to classical sharp interface models in the limit of vanishing interfacial thickness. Numerical simulations show that our model is capable to recover generic features of grain growth such as crystalline curvature ow, an anisot...
