Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a highly contagious viral infection affecting young children during the spring to fall seasons. Recently, serious outbreaks of HFMD were reported frequently in the Asia-Pacific region, including China and Korea. The symptoms of HFMD are usually mild, comprising fever, loss of appetite, and a rash with blisters, which do not need specific treatment. However...

This data article contains data related to the research article entitled "Rapid detection of enterovirus and Coxsackievirus A10 by a TaqMan based duplex one-step real time RT-PCR assay" (Chen at al., 2017) [1]. Primers and probe sequence design are among the most critical factors in real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay optimization. Linearity, sensitivity, specificity and precision a...

Here we report a familial cluster of 3 cases of coxsackievirus B3 infection: a recent history of illness in a woman's 3-year-old son with a coxsackievirus B3-positive stool culture indicated that he probably infected his mother at home during her last week of pregnancy. Consequently, she delivered an infected neonate who developed severe hepatitis, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and bi...

Strains of coxsackievirus group A type 9 were isolated in Boston from 1959 through 1961 from patients with rash, aseptic meningitis, or pneumonia (Table 1). One of these strains (no. 13) multiplied in the myocardium of 7to 12-monthold mice, producing focal myocarditis (Lerner et al., New Engl. J. Med. 269:678, 736, 1963; Lerner, Levin, and Finland, J. Exptl. Med. 115: 745, 1962; Lerner, Progr. ...

Coxsackievirus A6 (CVA6) has recently emerged as one of the predominant causative agents of hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD). The structure of the CVA6 mature viral particle has not been solved thus far. Our previous work shows that recombinant virus-like particles (VLPs) of CVA6 represent a promising CVA6 vaccine candidate. Here, we report the first cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) struc...

We describe the development and evaluation of an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IFA) kit for rapid and sensitive detection of coxsackievirus A2, -4, -5, -6, and -10. This IFA kit was determined to have 95.9 to 100% sensitivity and 95.8 to 97.2% specificity. It also proved to be beneficial in reducing the number of enteroviruses that are untypeable in the clinical virology laboratory.
