INTRODUCTION It is common for leiomyoma to undergo various secondary changes like hyaline degeneration, cystic change, myxoid degeneration, infection, necrosis, calcification, red degeneration and very rarely ossification. They are said to result from inadequate blood supply resulting in replacement of muscle fibres by hyaline material, collagen, calcium, mucopolysaccharides or a combination of...

Electron microscopic data on human bridging veins show thin walls of variable thickness, circumferential arrangement of collagen fibres and a lack of outer reinforcement by arachnoid trabecules, all contributory to the subdural portion of the vein being more fragile than its subarachnoid portion. These features explain the laceration of veins and the subdural location of resultant haematomas.

Carbon-fibre and polyester-fibre implants of comparable dimensions were used to replace the calcaneal tendon in 30 sheep. The neotendon produced in proximity to the polyester fibres was denser, more collagenous and more closely adherent than that in the carbon-based neotendon. Fragmentation of the carbon caused continuing cellular reaction which was associated with a poor collagen response.

Pigs are models in human phoniatry. However, features of maturation and ageing have not been considered with regard to the so-called body-cover model in this species. Therefore, the glottis of "young" (2-3 months; n = 6) and "old" (4-7 years; n = 6) minipigs was investigated. Their cranial (CraF) and caudal (CauF) vocal folds were histomorphometrically and stratigraphically analysed with emphas...

The shrinkage temperature of collagen is related to its stability. When shrinkage takes place, it is thought that the hydrothermal agitation at this temperature is sufficient to overcome the forces, chiefly hydrogen bonds, which hold together the polypeptide chains. When stability is reduced by removal of hydrogen bonds with hydrogen bond breakers or by chemical damage, less energy is required ...

Abstract Stimuli-responsive nanomaterials have the prospective to enable fabrication of new extracellular matrix-like substrates with unique structures and cell-instructive capabilities. The development biocompatible collagen on-demand ordered architectures is an open challenge since it well-known that directionality fibres affects important cell behaviour, such as proliferation, differentiatio...

Cells growing on plastic or glass surfaces in vitro may be brought into suspension by proteases (e.g. trypsin) or chelating agents (e.g. EGTA). Trypsin and EGTA remove different quantities and types of molecules from cell surfaces. Previous studies have revealed that when confluent cultures of either BHK or PyBHK cells are brought into suspension by exposure to trypsin, foetal calf serum (or fi...

Adult dermal wounds, in contrast to foetal wounds, heal with the formation of scar tissue. A crucial factor in determining the nature of the healed tissue is the ratio of collagen 1 to collagen 3, which regulates the diameter of collagen fibres. We develop a mathematical model which focuses on the stimulus for collagen synthesis due to the secretion of the different isoforms of the regulatory c...

We present an in-silico model of avascular poroelastic tumour growth coupled with a multiscale biphasic description of the tumour-host environment. The model is specified to in-vitro data, facilitating biophysically realistic simulations of tumour spheroid growth into a dense collagen hydrogel. We use the model to first confirm that passive mechanical remodelling of collagen fibres at the tumou...
