The absolute stereochemistry of compounds with axial and planar chirality is successfully determined by the crystalline sponge method without crystallization or derivatization of the compounds. This method is applied to absolute structure determination in the asymmetric synthesis of unique compounds with axial and planar chirality.

Chirality of a nucleotide-Cu(II) complex molecule, [CuNa(GMP)(HGMP)(H(2)O)(7)]·6(H(2)O)·CH(3)OH (GMP = guanosine 5'-monophosphate), is delivered to the three-dimensional supramolecular architecture by hydrogen bonding. Liquid- and solid-state circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy are used to analyse the molecular and supramolecular chirality.

A microscopic measurement system of circular dichroic spectra of second harmonic generation, which is applicable to detect the chirality of micro-region of molecular aggregates, has been investigated. The performance of the system was demonstrated by the discrimination of chirality of molecular aggregates of porphyrin on a glass plate.
