Genes encoding an aniline dioxygenase of Frateuria sp. ANA-18, which metabolizes aniline via the ortho-cleavage pathway of catechol, were cloned and named tdn genes. The tdn genes were located on the chromosomal DNA of this bacterium and weren't clustered with catechol-degrading gene clusters. These results show that the ANA-18 aniline-degrading gene cluster is constructionally different from P...

In situ forming hydrogels with catechol groups as tissue reactive functionalities are interesting bioinspired materials for tissue adhesion. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)–catechol tissue glues have been intensively investigated for this purpose. Different cross-linking mechanisms (oxidative or metal complexation) and cross-linking conditions (pH, oxidant concentration, etc.) have been studied in ...

In this work, water triggered dynamic catechol-Fe3+ coordinate bonds are revealed and studied at atomic, molecular and macroscopic levels using Mössbauer spectroscopy, rheological analysis, etc. DOPA-iron complexation is found to be dynamic in the presence of water, and this dynamic manner is immobilized after removing water. Accordingly, a water saturated lipophilic polymer containing catechol...

The characterization and identification of semiquinone radicals from catechol(amine)s and catechol estrogens by electron spin resonance spectroscopy is addressed. The use of diamagnetic metal ions, especially Mg2+ and Zn2+ ions, to detect transient semiquinone radicals in biological systems and to monitor their reactions, is discussed. A brief account of the identification and reactions of quin...

Pseudomonas putida strain ND6 is an efficient naphthalene-degrading bacterium. The complete genome of strain ND6 was sequenced and annotated. The genes encoding the enzymes involved in catechol degradation by the ortho-cleavage pathway were found in the chromosomal sequence, which indicated that strain ND6 is able to metabolize naphthalene by the catechol meta- and ortho-cleavage pathways.

Conjugation of a structurally diverse set of 53 catechol compounds was studied in vitro using six recombinant human sulfotransferases (SULTs), five UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGT) and the soluble form of catechol O-methyltransferase (S-COMT) as catalyst. The catechol set comprised endogenous compounds, such as catecholamines and catecholestrogens, drugs, natural plant constituents, and other...

Cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) and 1B1 (CYP1B1) catalyze the oxidative metabolism of 17 beta-estradiol (E2) to catechol estrogens (2-OHE2 and 4-OHE2) and estrogen quinones, which may lead to DNA damage. Catechol-O-methyltransferase catalyzes the methylation of catechol estrogens to methoxyestrogens (2-MeOE2, 2-OH-3-MeOE2, and 4-MeOE2), which simultaneously lowers the potential for DNA damage and ...

Marine mussels secret protein-based adhesives, which enable them to anchor to various surfaces in a saline, intertidal zone. Mussel foot proteins (Mfps) contain a large abundance of a unique, catecholic amino acid, Dopa, in their protein sequences. Catechol offers robust and durable adhesion to various substrate surfaces and contributes to the curing of the adhesive plaques. In this article, we...

1HE GROWING CLINICAL interest in the action and metabolism of the catechol amines makes it highly desirable to re-evaluate existing methods for the quantitative determination of these substances in body fluids. In 1955 Persky (1) reviewed the subject, and, on the whole, his conclusion is still valid that the fluorometric determination of the catechol amines in body fluids is the most practical ...
