Motivation: Heisele [3, 4] was able to classify faces very accurately using a component-based approach and an SVM classifier. We want to extend that technique first to recognize cars, and then other objects. Cars were selected because intuitively, they would seem to have strong characteristic components. Recent work in Agarwal & Roth [1] suggests that a component-based approach is suitable for ...

Introduction: Motion sensors are mechanical and electronic devices, which detect the body movement and provide an estimate of physical activity in children and adults. However, they need to be validated against criterion methods such as direct observation. The purpose of this study was to validate a wrist worn accelerometer to quantify the physical activity of children, by comparison to direct ...

We consider the rail car management at industrial in-plant railroads. Demands for loaded or empty cars are characterized by a track, a car type, and the desired quantity. If available, we assign cars from the stock, possibly substituting types, otherwise we rent additional cars. Transportation requests are fulfilled as a short sequence of pieces of work, the so-called blocks. Their design at a ...

We demonstrate two complementary types of microscopy using an identical setup for single-pulse coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) imaging, which employs an ultrabroadband laser pulse with a spectral bandwidth of 4800 cm(-1) and enables the suppression of nonresonant CARS signals. One is a novel type of microscopy that uses spectral phase modulation for the selective excitation of a si...

We report polarization coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (P-CARS) microscopy that allows vibrational imaging with high sensitivity and spectral selectivity. The nonresonant background signals from both Raman scatterers and the solvent are efficiently suppressed in P-CARS microscopy. We demonstrate P-CARS imaging of unstained cells based on the contrast of the protein amide I band.

This study assesses the risk to soil and groundwater in the event of a spill of hazardous materials transported in railroad tank cars. Tank cars are designed to be resistant to damage in accidents to reduce the probability of a spill. For safety and economic reasons, the damage-resistant design of tank cars is commensurate with the degree of hazard posed by the product they are intended to tran...

A simple technique for achieving high spectral resolution coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) spectra with a femtosecond laser system is presented. A linearly chirped and stretched ( 10 ps) pump pulse generates CARS signal only when overlapped in time with the Stokes pulse (90 fs), creating a ‘temporal slit’ that defines the spectral resolution of the technique. Multiplex CARS spectra ...

We describe a simple multiplex vibrational spectroscopic imaging technique based on employing chirped femtosecond pulses in a coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) scheme. Overlap of a femtosecond Stokes pulse with chirped pump/probe pulses introduces a temporal gate that defines the spectral resolution of the technique, allowing single-shot acquisition of high spectral resolution CARS s...

We demonstrate an ambient light coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering microscope that allows CARS imaging to be operated under environmental light for field use. The CARS signal is modulated at megahertz frequency and detected by a photodiode equipped with a lab-built resonant amplifier, then extracted through a lock-in amplifier. The filters in both the spectral domain and the frequency domain...

Coherent Raman imaging techniques have seen a dramatic increase in activity over the past decade due to their promise to enable label-free optical imaging with high molecular specificity. The sensitivity of these techniques, however, is many orders of magnitude weaker than fluorescence, requiring milli-molar molecular concentrations. Here, we describe a technique that can enable the detection o...
