Field trials were conducted to test the effectiveness of a gas exploding device called “Rodentorch” in reducing pest populations of ground squirrels and prairie dogs. Ignition of a propane/oxygen mixture injected for 30 seconds into burrows reduced prairie dog activity 13.0%. Doubling the injection time in prairie dog burrows to 60 seconds resulted in a 63.3% reduction. Reduction in ground squi...

After a general description of the Burrows Wheeler Transform and a brief survey of recent work on processing its output, the paper examines the coding of the zero-runs from the MTF recoding stage, an aspect with little prior treatment. It is concluded that the original scheme proposed by Wheeler is extremely efficient and unlikely to be much improved. The paper then proposes some new interpreta...
bzip is a program written by Julian Seward that is often used under Unix to compress single files. It splits the file into blocks which are compressed individually using a combination of the Burrows-Wheeler-Transformation, the Move-To-Front algorithm, Huffman and Runlength encoding. The author himself stated that compressed blocks that are damaged, i.e., part of which are lost, are essentially ...
In situ preservation of mud shrimps of the family Callianassidae (Decapoda: Axiidea) has rarely been noted in the fossil record. The present contribution reports body fossils of four members of the family (“Callianassa” almerai, “C.” pseudorakosensis, “C.” sp. 1 and “C.” sp. 2) which are apparently preserved within their burrows, all from middle Miocene deposits of Austria, Slovakia and Hungary...
Our aim in this pearl is to exploit simple equational reasoning to derive the inverse of the Burrows-Wheeler transform from its specification. We also outline how to derive the inverse of two more general versions of the transform, one proposed by Schindler and the other by Chapin and Tate.
