In this study, the effects of exposure to pyrene, fluorene and a mixture of selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) upon branchial Na (+)/K (+)-ATPase was investigated in juvenile seabream Sparus aurata in a 96 h in vivo experiment. No significant effect was found, and thus it was concluded that branchial Na(+)/K (+)-ATPase is probably not affected by PAH.

The symbiotic tubeworm Riftia pachyptila needs to fuel its chemoautotrophic symbiotic bacteria with inorganic carbon. CO(2) is transported from the surrounding water to the bacteriocytes located in the trophosome, through the branchial plume and the body fluids. Previous studies have demonstrated the implication of carbonic anhydrase (CA) and proton pumps (ATPases) at various steps of CO(2) tra...

Plasma membranes of the gills of freshwater- and seawater-adapted tilapia were analyzed for Ca(2+)-ATPase and Na+/Ca2+ exchange activity. The relative importance of ATP-driven and Na(+)-gradient-driven Ca2+ transport in Ca2+ extrusion was evaluated on the basis of kinetic analyses in vitro. The Na+/Ca2+ exchangers in branchial membranes from freshwater or seawater fish displayed similar kinetic...

BACKGROUND To describe the morphology of a macular hole in the early postoperative period following vitrectomy with primary silicone oil tamponade. METHODS A case report with optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans prior to surgery, at 20 minutes postoperatively and then at 17 hours postoperatively. RESULTS OCT images of a 73-year-old woman with a stage 3 macular hole were obtained. At 20 ...

Electric warm-water lavage toilet seats are in wide use as an appliance beneficial for the maintenance of hygiene and the prophylaxis and improvement of conditions such as constipation and hemorrhoids. In this study, we surveyed the bacterial content in the lavage water of warm-water lavage toilet seats, and fecal bacterial contamination of the gluteal and genital regions due to droplet infecti...

Dietary Na+ loads (0.570 mmol kg-1 fish) were almost completely absorbed within 7 h, and branchial Na+ excretion commenced within 1 h. Na+ loads of less than 1 mmol kg-1 were lost through the gills through a significant decrease in Na+ influx with unaltered Na+ efflux rate (compared with Na+ fluxes in unfed fish). At higher salt loads (>18 mmol kg-1), Na+ loss increased as a result of sign...

The congenital midline cervical cleft is a rare developmental abnormality of the anterior part of the neck Luschka in 1848 and noted in the English literature by Bailey in 1924 [1,2]. The lesion is often initially evaluated by a pediatrician or primary care physician who may misinterpret the anomaly as a branchial cleft deformity or thyroglossal duct cyst. Although developmentally related to th...

The species of the amphipod family Melphidippidae are distributed worldwide in marine habitats, but there is no record of this family from Brazil so far. A new genus and species of Melphidippidae are described from Brazilian waters. Stebbingiella gen. nov. is monotypic and is distinguished from the other genera of the family by the presence of: antenna 1 with accessory flagellum 7-articulate, l...

OBJECTIVE To define MRI criteria for the presumptive diagnosis of Rathke cleft cyst (RCC). METHODS One hundred and three patient MRI scans suggesting RCC performed between January 2005 and January 2011 were retrospectively reviewed for indications, cyst location, T1 and T2 signal intensity, dimensions, encroachment on optic chiasm, enhancement pattern, and stability over a year. RESULTS Of ...
