Response of EBV infection to valacyclovir in HIV infected children has not been reported earlier. An 8 years old HIV infected girl with undetectable viral load and normal CD4 count on regular antiretroviral therapy presented with persistent fever, lymphadenopathy and pancytopenia due to Epstein Barr virus (EBV). The child responded to valacyclovir.
We compared primary Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and suppression between Kenyan human immunodeficiency virus-infected infants starting nevirapine-based vs lopinavir/ritonavir-based antiretroviral regimens. Although the rate of EBV infection was similar between groups, infants receiving lopinavir/ritonavir suppressed EBV more rapidly. Our findings suggest that specific antiretrovirals may ...
Malaria is the most common specific cause of fever in returning travelers, but many other vectorborne infections and viral infections are emerging and increasingly encountered by travelers. We documented common and emerging viral pathogens in malaria-negative specimens from ill travelers returning to Canada. Anonymized, malaria-negative specimens were examined for various viral pathogens by rea...
Background and Aims: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is very common in the population. Virus belongs to the family Herpesviridae, whose representatives are characterized by the ability to cause the human body latent persistent infections. The goal of this study was to assess EBV infection frequency using PCR method in samples from inflammatory eye disease, in comparison with EBV presence in ...
Well-recognized association between HIV 1 infection and collapsing glomerulopathy (CG) raises the possibility that intrarenal infection by other viruses may also contribute to the development of this lesion in native or post-transplant kidneys. There is evidence in literature about association of these lesions with cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus, hepatitis C virus, and parvovirus B19 infec...
Background: Given the fact that viral infections play an important role, either directly or indirectly, in around 20 percent of human cancers, this study aimed at investigating potential association Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) esophageal cancer is sixth most common cause cancer-related deaths. Methods: In case-control study, a total 200 paraffin-embedded biopsies cancerou...
We have sequenced a 5.4 kb region of the genome from the avian herpesvirus infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV) and identified genes homologous to the thymidine kinase (TK) gene, the capsid p40 gene of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), a gene encoding a protein antigenic in Epstein-Barr virus infections plus one other highly conserved gene encoding a protein implicated in cell fusion in...
Viruses are ubiquitous and are also the pathogenic agents that are most commonly associated with neoplastic transformation of cells of several organs in human beings – thereby causing cancer of epithelial cells (carcinomas) or cancer of mesenchymal cells (leukemias, lymphomas and sarcomas) depending on the type and location of the infected host cell. This review highlights the six major groups ...
