This case report concerns a young woman who, during her pregnancy, suffered severe mitral regurgitation. It was discovered at the same time that she had a left atrial myxoma. During the early postpartum period she successfully underwent an anterior minithoracotomy to remove the left atrial myxoma in conjunction with repair of the mitral valve. The thoracotomy approach in this specific patient w...

A 28 year-old asymptomatic male with previously detected elevation of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL) had a right atrial mass diagnosed by transthoracic echocardiography. Although the morphological characteristics were highly suggestive of myxoma, due to the presence of aPL elevation it had to be differentiated from atrial thrombus. The patient underwent surgery and a 3 x 4 cm mass with its l...

A 40 year old woman with cough and exertional dyspnoea was found to have a large right atrial myxoma by M mode and cross sectional echocardiography. Prolapse of the tumour into the right ventricle occurred during diastole with sufficient force to cause mechanical distortion of the interventricular septum. Septal motion became normal after surgical resection of the myxoma.

BACKGROUND/AIM Myxoma is the most common benign primary cardiac neoplasm, and usually originates from the left atrial septum. Early diagnosis of cardiac myxomas depends on a high index of a clinical suspicion. Surgical management must be done as soon as possible after diagnosis. The aim of this retrospective study was to present diagnostics and treatment outcome data of 61 patients with cardiac...

Left atrial (LA) myxoma presenting with symptoms of mitral stenosis in elderly males is very rare accounting for 10% of the cases. We report an 80-year-old male who presented with symptoms of orthopnea and palpitations and was subsequently found to have a large LA myxoma obstructing the mitral valve and causing pulmonary hypertension (PHT).

Cardioembolic stroke is an important cause of stroke in young people. Cardioembolism classically causes infarcts in multiple vascular territories. In the case described here a young woman developed cardioembolic stroke secondary to atrial myxoma. The presentation was atypical in that the woman had no systemic manifestations of her myxoma.

A 36-year-old male involved in a car accident was found to have an embolic stroke due to a left atrial myxoma. Open heart surgery was delayed 4 weeks to decrease the risk of neurologic complications from the anticoagulation required for cardiopulmonary bypass. After resection of the myxoma, intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography found severe mitral regurgitation, which was repaired.

An intracardiac myxoma is the most common tumour of the heart with an estimated incidence of 0.5 per million population per year. Extensive calcification is rare in these tumours. We describe a rare case of a large left atrial myxoma, visible on the chest radiograph, with extensive calcification and osseous metaplasia.

We present the case of a young female with a large sporadic left atrial myxoma. Interestingly, despite the tumor's large size, this patient had only mild exertional dyspnea without any embolic events or constitutional symptoms.

Cardiac myxoma is the most common primary tumor of the heart. The clinical presentation ranges from asymptomatic to symptomatic with constitutional symptoms, obstructive symptoms, or evidence of embolism. Most cases are sporadic; recurrence rates are low after surgical excision for these cases. We present a case of an asymptomatic right atrial myxoma which recurred 1 year after its resection.
