Aortic valve regurgitation caused by a leaflet perforation occurs most often with infective endocarditis involving the aortic valve. Although rare, leaflet perforation can be caused by suture-related injury during cardiac operations, such as mitral valve replacement, ventricular septal defect (VSD) repair, and repair of an ostium primum atrial septal defect. Few reports have described this form...

Introduction: Sinus of Valsalva aneurysm (SOVA) may have associated infective endocarditis in which case single aneurysm may drain into adjacent chamber of heart via multiple openings. We report a rare case of congenital SOVA with associated infective endocarditis where intraoperative transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) helped in localizing two separate openings in the SOVA draining into right...

The echocardiographic abnormalities in five cases of aortic valve endocarditis are described and are correlated with the anatomical appearance of the valve at the time of aortic valve replacement. These echocardiographic findings are compared with those which have been reported previously in this condition. Thickening of the aortic leaflets in systole or multiple linear or coalescent aortic val...

Recently, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has emerged as an alternative for the treatment of severe symptomatic aortic stenosis patients. Although experience with TAVR is increasing exponentially, few cases of post-TAVR endocarditis are reported. We present a case of 76-year-old man with infective endocarditis after TAVR who was definitely diagnosed by echocardiography.

Exophiala (Wangiella) dermatitidis is an emerging dematiaceous fungus associated with high mortality rates and is a rare cause of endocarditis. We describe the first case of E. dermatitidis endocarditis of a prosthetic aortic valve and aortic graft in an immune competent patient with no clear risk factors of hematological acquisition.

We report the case of a 34-year-old man with aortic valve infective endocarditis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, complicated by an aortic annular abscess. A 23-mm St. Jude HP aortic mechanical prosthesis was implanted. The pre-discharge echocardiogram revealed a mycotic aneurysm of the basal posteroinferior wall, confirmed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and it was...

Prosthetic valve endocarditis due to Cardiobacterium hominis is rare and recommended therapy includes a third generation cephalosporin. We report a case of Cardiobacterium hominis endocarditis post transcatheter aortic valve replacement in a patient with significant beta-lactam antimicrobial sensitivities who was successfully treated with ciprofloxacin monotherapy in conjunction with surgery.

We present a new experimental model of Staphylococcus aureus infective endocarditis in guinea pigs. Permanent aortic valve damage was produced by electrocoagulation after catheterization of the right carotid artery, which allowed avoidance of the intracardiac catheter to produce cardiac vegetations. Our model closely mimics pathological mechanisms of native valve endocarditis.

Introduction:Aerococcus urinae is a rare cause of infective endocarditis. Aerococcus is a gram positive cocci that is easily misidentified as Staphylococci or Streptococci. The true incidence rate of this pathogen is likely underestimated. Recent advances in laboratory diagnostic methods with matrix-associated laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) have lead...

The ultrasonic features in a case of bacterial endocarditis in which a highly mobile, cord-like vegetation, attached to the noncoronary cusp of the aortic valve, are reported. The echocardiogram demonstrated abnormal echo patterns in the left ventricular outflow tract in diastrole which were continuous with similar echoes in the aortic root. While these findings did not differ from the previous...
