Stress-induced phase transitions(B2-Llo, B2-fcc) on an FeRh alloy were investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy(TEM). An Fe-SO.Sat%Rh alloy was rolled to 80pm thickness, and annealed at 1370K for 173ks. Annealed sample sheets were cold rolled at various rolling rates, and changes of the sample alloy on the phase state were investigated with XRD. The L lo ph...

Dislocation structures are ubiquitous in any 3D printed alloy and they play a primary role determining the mechanical response of an alloy. While it is understood that these form due to rapid solidification during printing, there no consensus on whether evolve subsequent solid-state thermal cycling occurs with further addition layers. In order design microstructures desired responses, crucial f...

Designed as a high-capacity alloy host for Na-ion chemistry, a forest of Sn nanorods with a unique core-shell structure was synthesized on viral scaffolds, which were genetically engineered to ensure a nearly vertical alignment upon self-assembly onto a metal substrate. The interdigital spaces thus formed between individual rods effectively accommodated the volume expansion and contraction of t...

Surface treatments of engineering materials are important for serviceable engineering components. One of the thermo-chemical surface treatments of steel based materials is the boriding process. In this study, low alloy steel substrates were borided by pack boriding process at 900 C. Experimental indentation tests were conducted on Dynamic Ultra-micro Hardness test machine, under applied peak lo...

Remarkable magnetic and spin-dependent transport properties arise from well-designed spintronic materials and heterostructures. Half-metallic Heusler alloys with high spin polarization exhibit properties that are particularly advantageous for the development of high-performance spintronic devices. Here, we report fully (001)-epitaxial growth of a high-quality half-metallic NiMnSb half-Heusler a...

We present a case study where we use automated formal analysis to reason about problem-frame concerns. The descriptions of the problem domains, machine and requirements are written in the Alloy language. We show that an evaluation of results and counterexamples provided by a model finder can reveal useful information that can help remove inconsistencies as well as composition errors.

We report results on a nite element simulation of a needle-like martensitic microstructure observed in biaxial loading experiments conducted by Chu and James on single crystals of the shape-memory alloy Cu-14at.%Al-3:9at.%Ni. This microstructure was observed near an interface between twinned layers of two variants and a pure variant of martensite. We used a geometrically nonlinear theory of mar...

We have investigated the magnetic properties of a GaN/Ga1−xMnxN (x = 0.1) digital ferromagnetic heterostructure (DFH) showing ferromagnetic behavior using soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The Mn L2,3-edge XAS spectra were similar to those of Ga1−xMnxN random alloy thin films, indicating a substitutional doping of high concentration Mn into G...

Tin alloy-based anodes supported by inverse-opal nanoscaffolds undergo large volume changes from (de)lithiation during cyclic battery (dis)charging, affecting their mechanical stability. We perform continuum mechanics-based simulation to study the evolution of internal stresses and strains as a function of the geometry of the active layer(s): (i) thickness of Ni3Sn2 single layer (30 and 60 nm) ...

We present a study on the high performance p-type AlxGa1 xN (x 1⁄4 0:35) layers grown by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition on AlN template/sapphire substrate. The influence of growth conditions on the p-type conductivity of the AlxGa1 xN (x 1⁄4 0:35) alloy is investigated. From the Hall effect and I–V transmission line model measurements, a p-type resistivity of 3.5O cm for Al...
