Age Related Macular Degeneration is a degenerative condition of the macula and is increasingly pervasive in our country, encountered unfortunately in patients even younger than 55. The current work is trying to present the importance of fluorescein angiography in this disease.

An analysis of blind registration forms was made to determine the commonest causes of blindness in the west of Scotland. It was found that the leading causes of blindness in order of frequency of incidence were senile macular degeneration, glaucoma, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, and myopic degeneration. Diabetic retinopathy was the leading cause of blindness among persons of working age.

Macular pigment is key to the healthy eye. Direct determination of macular pigment optical density using single-wavelength reflectometry with a fundus camera has allowed to identify changes in macular pigmentation in patients with dry or exudative macular degeneration. This approach could be useful for individualised patient follow-up, particularly in those with age-related macular degeneration.
