Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is rarely reported in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and may be difficult to differentiate from vincristine induced neuropathy. We report two children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on induction chemotherapy who developed GBS. The diagnostic issues and potential pathogenic mechanisms underlying GBS in pediatric patients with ALL are discussed.

Inflammation of peripheral nerves may be due to autoimmune disease, infection or vasculitis. The nerve fibres are normally protected by a specialised endothelium, positive endoneurial pressure and perineurial barrier. Most cases of inflammatory neuropathy are characterised by endoneurial inflammation and primary demyelination without infection or vasculitis, and are thought to have an autoimmun...

Recent studies on axonal transport in experimental neuropathy are reviewed and the following combinations of pathological changes and underlying axonal transport abnormalities are proposed for a classification of polyneuropathies. Alterations of the anterograde transport of slow component a(SCa) leads to changes of the dimensions of the axon calibre without the occurrence either of overt neurop...

Acute median nerve compression usually occurs from increased pressure within the carpal tunnel and forearm compartments. Although the hyperesthesia from burns may mimic symptoms of acute compression neuropathy, clinical diagnosis should be made from history, clinical signs and symptoms. Early recognition and decompression of the carpal tunnel either as part of the burn excision or along with es...

Diabetes is a chronic disease that requires continual medical care and patient self-management education in order to prevent acute complications and to reduce the risk of long-term complications. Diabetes is the leading known cause of neuropathy in developed countries, and neuropathy is the most common complication and the leading source of morbidity and mortality in diabetes patients. Diabetic...

We assessed the clinicopathological features of 92 patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome-associated neuropathy (76 women, 16 men, 54.7 years, age at onset). The majority of patients (93%) were diagnosed with Sjögren's syndrome after neuropathic symptoms appeared. We classified these patients into seven forms of neuropathy: sensory ataxic neuropathy (n = 36), painful sensory neuropathy withou...

objective the guillain-barre syndrome (gbs) is characterized by the acute onset of rapidlyprogressive, symmetric muscle  weakness with absent or decreased deep tendon reflexes. gbs is the most common cause of acute flaccid paralysis in childhood, with an incidence of 0.6-4 per 100 000 population per year. the clinical features are distinct and obtaining patient's history and conducting an exami...

The purpose of this case report is to show the diagnostic potential of diffusion-weighted MR imaging in establishing the presence of ischemic optic neuropathy (ION). We report the MR imaging findings in a patient presenting with acute ION in whom diffusion imaging showed decreased water mobility as seen in patients with acute brain ischemia.

BACKGROUND Oxaliplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent, causes an unusual acute peripheral neuropathy. Oxaliplatin-induced acute peripheral neuropathy appears in almost all patients rapidly after infusion, and is triggered or exacerbated by cold, while its mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, the involvement of thermosensitive transient receptor potential channels (TRPA1, T...
