Forty-five percent of 108 nontypable strains of Staphylococcus aureus from clinical and environmental sources were phage typable after heat shock and acridine orange treatment. Although phage patterns were produced by different types of treatment, the same phage groups were present, showing specificity. The newly typable strains appear to be similar in phage group distribution to the primary ty...

A fluorescence stereomicroscope system was developed in order to observe in situ the distribution of nuclei in intravascular Bong-Han ducts and corpuscle tissues by injecting acridine orange, which stained specifically nuclei. Intravascular Bong-Han corpuscles, connected with Bong-Han ducts could be detected in the aortas of rats, mice, and rabbits.

An accurate, rapid, and inexpensive method was developed for detecting and enumerating bacteria adherent to Foley urinary catheters based on malachite green staining of acridine orange-prestained specimens. This method has proven to be quick and reliable and will find application in quantitative studies of biomaterial-related sepsis.

The acridine orange is an excellent vital stain for the "in vivo" study of the lysosomal dynamics in cultured keratocytes. In normal keratocytes the lysosomes are mostly grouped around one or both nucleus poles. In keratocytes from macular dystrophy of the cornea there is a hypertrophy of the lysosomal system, which in vain tends to compensate for the consequences of the enzymatic deficiency.

For enumeration of intracellular organisms (ICO) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples, the May-Grünwald-Giemsa (MGG) stain displayed higher interobserver agreement than the acridine orange and Gram stains. The MGG stain offered a reliable enumeration of ICO when 200 cells were counted by one observer.
