The susceptibilities of 142 Acinetobacter baumannii-calcoaceticus complex isolates (95 from wounded U.S. soldiers deployed overseas) to 13 antimicrobial agents were determined by broth microdilution. The most active antimicrobial agents (> or =95% of isolates susceptible) were colistin, polymyxin B, and minocycline.
Strains of Caulobacter crescentus, Pseudomonas putida, Acinetobacter calcoaceticus, Rhizobium meliloti, and Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides carrying the kanamycin resistance-encoding transposon Tn5 were 15 to 500 times more resistant to streptomycin than transposon-free strains. The streptomycin resistance determinant, which is separable from the kanamycin resistance determinant of Tn5, was not ex...
Ventriculitis from infection with Acinetobacter calcoaceticus variant anitratus occurred in an infant two weeks after surgical repair of a lumbosacral meningomyelocele and ventriculoperitoneal shunting. Recovery took place on replacing the shunt with an extraventricular deviation device and giving gentamicin and ampicillin intravenously.
A mutant of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus ADP1 unable to grow on alkanes was complemented for growth on hexadecane with a DNA fragment encoding a protein with homology to XcpR, a subunit of the general secretion pathway for exoproteins in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Insertional inactivation of xcpR in A. calcoaceticus ADP1 by transcriptional fusion to lacZ abolishes secretion of lipase and esterase a...
The 3.94-Mb draft genome of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus GK1, a hydrocarbonoclastic plant growth-promoting Gram-negative rhizospheric bacterium, is presented here. Isolated at the Ford Motor Company site in Genk, Belgium, from poplar trees planted on a diesel-contaminated plume, GK1 is useful for enhancing hydrocarbon phytoremediation.
BACKGROUND The Acinetobacter baumannii group, including Acinetobacter baumannii, Acinetobacter genomospecies 3 and 13TU, is phenotypically indistinguishable and uniformly identified as Acinetobacter baumannii by laboratories of clinical microbiology. This review aimed to demonstrate the differences among them. METHODS Literatures associated with the Acinetobacter baumannii group were identifi...
Acinetobacter calcoaceticus is capable of growing on acetate or compounds that are metabolized to acetate. During adaptation to growth on acetate, A. calcoaceticus B4 exhibits an increase in NADP(+)-isocitrate dehydrogenase and isocitrate lyase activities. In contrast, during adaptation to growth on acetate, Escherichia coli exhibits a decrease in NADP(+)-isocitrate dehydrogenase activity that ...
Growth of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus on specific alkanes altered the outer membrane permeability of the organism, as indicated by a change in sensitivity to the antibiotic actinomycin D. As the carbon length of the alkane energy source decreased, outer membrane permeability and susceptibility to actinomycin D increased. Concomitant with the increase in outer membrane permeability, A. calcoacet...
We surveyed 15 different brands of eye shadow on display for customer use in different retail stores for microbial contamination. This was the first reported microbial surveillance of in-use eye shadow display testers in retail establishments. Cultures were obtained at each retail store. Sterile dacron swabs were rolled and rubbed over the entire used surface of each shadow, and each inoculum w...
