Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with Burkitt lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, opportunistic lymphomas in immunocompromised hosts, and a fraction of gastric cancers. Aberrant promoter methylation accompanies human gastric carcinogenesis, though the contribution of EBV to such somatic methylation changes has not been fully clarified. We analyzed promoter methylation in gastric cancer ca...

AIMS We have previously demonstrated the importance of gastric and intestinal phenotypic expression for stomach carcinogenesis. In this study, we focused on Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated stomach cancers, with special attention to Cdx2. METHODS AND RESULTS We evaluated the expression of gastric and intestinal phenotypic markers by immunohistochemistry in 35 EBV-positive [EBV (+)] and 75 ...

BACKGROUND Human-to-human transmission of the persistent infection establishing Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) occurs via saliva. Tonsils act as important portal of entry and exit of EBV. The contagiousness of pediatric EBV carriers and the role played by tonsillar enlargement (TE) are not known. METHODS We compared EBV shedding in mouthwash samples from pediatric EBV carriers with or without TE to...

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), the first isolated human tumour virus, was identified in 1964 by Epstein’s group in a cell line derived from Burkitt lymphoma (Epstein et al., 1964). EBV is a human herpesvirus, classified within the gammaherpesviruses subfamily, and is the prototype of the Lymphocryptovirus genus. In keeping with the systematic nomenclature adopted for all human herpesviruses, the...

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is associated with human cancers such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, and gastric carcinoma (GC). EBV is associated with about 10% of all GC cases globally. EBV-associated GC has distinct features from EBV-negative GC. However, it is still unclear if EBV infection has any effect on GC chemoresistance. Cell proliferation assay, cell cy...

EBV associates with various T-cell-proliferating diseases such as chronic active EBV infection and nasal lymphoma. In contrast to B cells, which are highly susceptible to EBV infection in vitro, T cells are refractory to EBV infection in vitro, and it has been difficult to examine the effects of EBV infection on T cells. We recently generated EBV recombinants with a selectable marker, which mad...

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) oriP and the EBV nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA-1) protein allow persistence of EBV-based episomes. A nuclear matrix attachment region (MAR) spans oriP and the adjacent region of the EBV genome containing the EBV-expressed RNAs. Here, we show that episomes with the MAR are retained significantly more efficiently in EBV-positive B cells than episomes containing oriP alone.

A comprehensive mapping of interactions among Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) proteins and interactions of EBV proteins with human proteins should provide specific hypotheses and a broad perspective on EBV strategies for replication and persistence. Interactions of EBV proteins with each other and with human proteins were assessed by using a stringent high-throughput yeast two-hybrid system. Overall, ...

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-specific leukocyte migration inhibition (LMI) reaction was used to detect EBV antigens in human tumor biopsies in parallel with nuclei acid hybridization for EBV DNA. None of six EBV DNA-negative tumors gave any significant LMI reaction. Fourteen of 17 EBV DNA-positive tumors gave a significant difference between the migration of leukocytes from EBV-seropositive ver...
