A molecule and its noncovalently bonded solvent shell can be termed “supermolecule”. It is assumed that its ground-state hypersurrace consists of many shallow local minima which have approximately the same energy and correspond to different arrangements of the solvent shell. At cryogenic temperatures each supermolecule sits in one of the different minima. Supermolecules might show different phy...

We have demonstrated electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in an inhomogeneously broadened spectral hole-burning system of Pr(3+)-doped Y(2)SiO(5) at 6 K. We have also shown enhancement of four-wave mixing under conditions of reduced absorption. This demonstration opens the possibilities of pursuing EIT applications such as high-resolution optical image processing and optical data stor...

An isolated and spectrally narrow absorptive feature is prepared via a novel spectral hole burning process in an inhomogeneously broadened optical transition in Eu(3+):Y(2)SiO5. With the narrow feature it is shown that it is feasible to apply complex optical pulse sequences analogous to rf pulse sequences used extensively in NMR.

We reported a wavelength-flexible all-polarization-maintaining self-sweeping fiber laser based on the intracavity loss tuning brought by bent optical fiber. The bidirectional cavity structure achieved effect due to appearance of dynamic grating in active with spatial hole burning effect. Under this, section was into circle for adjusting cavity. With descending diameter circle, sweeping range mo...

We investigated spectral holes burnt at 1.5 K into the origins of several tautomeric forms of mesoporphyrin IX-substituted horseradish peroxidase at pH 8 under pressures up to 2 MPa. From the pressure-induced lineshift the compressibility of the apoprotein could be determined. We found that the compressibility changed significantly when measured at different tautomer origins. It was concluded t...

The rebinding kinetics of CO to myoglobin after flash photolysis is nonexponential in time below approximately 180 K; the kinetics is governed by a distribution of enthalpic barriers. This distribution results from inhomogeneities in the protein conformation, referred to as conformational substates. Hole-burning experiments on the Soret and IR CO-stretch bands test the assumption that an inhomo...

Using a femtosecond three-pulse pump-probe technique, we investigated spectral hole-burning and gain recovery dynamics in self-organized In~Ga!As quantum dots. The spectral hole dynamics are qualitatively different from those observed in quantum wells, and allow us to distinguish unambiguously the gain recovery due to intradot relaxation and that due to carrier capture. The gain recovery due to...

The time signals relevant for nonresonant spectral hole burning, a pump-wait-probe method designed to investigate slow relaxation, are calculated. The step-response function following the application of a high amplitude ac field (pump) and an intermediate waiting period is shown to be the sum of the equilibrium integrated response and a modification due to the preparation via ac irradiation. Bo...

Photochemical hole burning has been observed at 1.5 K in bacteriorhodopsin (bR) and bovine rhodopsin at wavelengths spanning their lowest energy electronic absorption bands. Hole widths were -2500 cm-' full width at half-maximum (fwhm) in bacteriorhodopsin and -2400 cm-' fwhm in rhodopsin. The positions of the hole minima were insensitive to bum wavelength, indicating that minimal site selectio...

We describe methods for the measurement of translational diffusion in very large static magnetic field gradients by NMR. The techniques use a "hole-burning" sequence that, with the use of fringe field gradients of 42 T/m, can image diffusion along one dimension on a submicron scale. Two varieties of this method are demonstrated, including a particularly efficient mode called the "hole-comb," in...
