Transition row metal ions are both essential and toxic to microorganisms. Zinc in excess has significant toxicity to bacteria, and host release of Zn(II) at mucosal surfaces is an important innate defence mechanism. However, the molecular mechanisms by which Zn(II) affords protection have not been defined. We show that in Streptococcus pneumoniae extracellular Zn(II) inhibits the acquisition of...

Soils around mining sites play a significant role in the transport and control of heavy metals in the environment. Therefore, understanding the adsorption properties of soil is essential in solving pollution problems. The objective of this paper was to study Zn(II) adsorption onto Sarcheshmeh copper mine soils. The adsorption isotherms of Zn(II) were studied. The Langmuir isotherm indicated an ...

Ruthenium phthalocyanines and naphthalocyanines with axial dendronised pyridine ligands show high solubility in a variety of solvents, and exhibit solid-state absorption spectra that are comparable to those obtained in dilute solution, making them interesting candidates for optical limiting in the visible.

As part of a study of the effect of particle size on reactivity of hematite to aqueous metal ions, the sorption of Zn(II) on hematite nanoparticles and microparticles was examined over a wide range of Zn(II) concentrations using Zn K-edge EXAFS. When reacted with nanoparticles at pH 5.5 and low Zn(II) sorption densities (0.04 < Γ < 2.76 μmol/m), Zn(II) formed five-coordinated or a mixture of fo...

A novel highly sensitive optical NO2-selective sensor was developed using phthalocyaninato-iron(II) as a selective complexing agent. In order to solubilize the ironII+phthalocyanine and to obtain the monomer species, a N-donor ligand was used as a solvent. The membrane solution was deposited onto a novel aluminum oxide/hydroxide nanoporous material by a spin-coating technique. The chemical reac...

The Staphylococcus aureus plasmid pI258 cadCA operon encodes a P-type ATPase, CadA, that confers resistance to Cd(II)/Pb(II)/Zn(II). Expression is regulated by CadC, a homodimeric repressor that dissociates from the cad operator/promoter upon binding of Cd(II), Pb(II), or Zn(II). CadC is a member of the ArsR/SmtB family of metalloregulatory proteins. The crystal structure of CadC shows two type...

We report on the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling between a submonolayer of Mn(II)-phthalocyanine molecules and a ferromagnetic Eu(II)-oxide thin film. The exchange energy is larger by nearly two orders of magnitude compared to previous studies involving oxidic substrates.
