We study sympathetic cooling of the radial ion motion in a linear RF trap mixed barium-ytterbium chains. Barium ions are Doppler-cooled, while ytterbium cooled through their interaction with cold barium ions. estimate efficiency by measuring average occupation quantum numbers, and thus temperature, all normal modes chain. The full set orderings chain two have been probed, we show that thermal n...

After 3 years of extensive R&D the Bogoroditsk Techno-Chemical Plant in Russia is ready to enter a preproduction phase where 6000 Lead Tungstate crystals will be produced for the CMS electromagnetic calorimeter during a period of about 18 months. Although this is a demonstration test for the mass production, these crystals will have to be installed in the calorimeter and have therefore to compl...

We demonstrate the active wavefront control of a 19-core ytterbium-doped fiber amplifier by the digital holography technique. The output wavefront is corrected even in the presence of large externally induced perturbations, with a measured output Strehl ratio of 0.6 in all cases. The wavefront-controlled multicore fiber is used to amplify 800 ps pulses at 1064 nm at a repetition rate of 40?kHz,...

Nowadays atomic optical lattice clocks can perform frequency measurements with a fractional uncertainty at the 10 level in few hours of measurement, outperforming the best caesium (Cs) standards operated in the world. Since the definition of the unit of time is based on Cs, a worldwide debate about the need to promote the redefinition of the second on a optical reference is under-way. At INRIM ...

We report the observation of electromagnetically induced transparency in a sample of cryogenically cooled ground-state atomic ytterbium ((1)S(0)). The transparency is produced due to coherence between the optical field and the nuclear spin state of the (173)Yb nucleus. Because the nuclear spin states interact very weakly with their environment, they are resistant to decoherence due to inelastic...

We evaluated the C(6) coefficients of Yb-Yb, Yb-alkali, and Yb-group II van der Waals interactions with 2% uncertainty. The only existing experimental result for such quantities is for the Yb-Yb dimer. Our value, C(6)=1929(39) a.u., is in excellent agreement with the recent experimental determination of 1932(35) a.u. We have also developed a new approach for the calculation of the dynamic corre...

Working with ytterbium ~Yb!, we demonstrate dual-isotope magneto-optic traps of extreme experimental simplicity yet containing either fermion-boson or boson-boson isotope pairs. Pairs studied include Yb1Yb ~a fermion-boson mixture! and Yb1Yb and Yb1Yb ~boson-boson mixtures!. Trapping is performed using the Yb (6s)S0-(6s6p) P1 transition, an uncooled thermal source, and bichromatic trapping beam...

We demonstrate an ytterbium gain band self-induced modulation instability laser. A highly nonlinear holey fiber is used to provide the anomalous dispersion required for bright soliton generation at 1 microm. The all-fiber integrated source yields a 40 GHz train of 4 ps pulses at a wavelength of 1064 nm.

We show that optical spectroscopy of Rydberg states can provide accurate in situ thermometry at room temperature. Transitions from a metastable state to Rydberg states with principal quantum numbers of 25-30 have 200 times larger fractional frequency sensitivities to blackbody radiation than the strontium clock transition. We demonstrate that magic-wavelength lattices exist for both strontium a...

We compare aspects of biological X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) studies of cations and anions, and report on some examples of anion binding in biological systems. Brown algae such as Laminaria digitata (oarweed) are effective accumulators of I from seawater, with tissue concentrations exceeding 50 mM, and the vanadate-containing enzyme haloperoxidase is implicated in halide accumulation. W...
