BACKGROUND: Accentuation in Japanese loanword phonology has been an area of controversy. Previous linguists such as McCawley (1968) have suggested a traditional mora-based generalization: loanword accentuation in Japanese has a basic default pattern on the syllable containing the antepenultimate mora; while others claim that Japanese loanword accentuation follows the Latin stress rule (Kubozono...
Morphophonological alternations in English words such as able versus ability involve changes in both stress and vowel quality. This study examined how native speakers of Spanish and English produced four such morphologically related English word pairs. Degree of stress and vowel quality was assessed auditorily and instrumentally. Stress placement generally seemed to constitute less of a learnin...
The present study examined the effects of boundary strength and stress on nasal coarticulation with neighboring segments. Acoustic and nasal airflow data were recorded from four speakers as they produced intervocalic fricative-nasal and nasalfricative sequences that spanned a word-internal boundary or a word boundary under two different stress conditions. Although neither stress nor boundary af...
We present a study on the use of lexical stress classi cation to aid in the recognition of phonetically similar words. In this study, we use a simple pattern recognition approach to determine which syllable is lexically stressed for phonetically similar word pairs (e.g., PERfect, perFECT) extracted from continuously spoken sentences. We use a combination of two features from the acoustic correl...
The present article investigates the stress pattern system of Central Sarawani Balochi (CSB), spoken in Sarawan located in Sistan and Baluchestan province of the Islamic Republic of Iran, based on metrical theory as developed in Hayes (1995). Correspondingly, the present research illustrates the position of primary and secondary stress in mono-morphemic words, verbal paradigms, compound words, ...
this study explores the nature of relatively free word order of verbs and their arguments in persian. based on the theory of phases and multiple spell-out which is an instantiation of minimalist program, we attempt to account for the restrictions on these word order variations. having a direct interaction with the syntax-phonology interface rather than a purely syntactic one, these restrictions...
Our study investigated the pitch and duration properties of word stress in a large speech corpus. We concluded that pitch and duration play different roles in distinguishing word-level stress classes. In the case of pitch, primary-stress vowels were different from secondary-stress and reduced vowels; in the case of duration, reduced vowels were different from the other two types of vowels.
