Satellite observation of Earth's atmosphere in the millimetre and sub-millimetre wavelength region is complementary to those in the visible and infrared spectral region. The emission and opacity of the atmosphere, and scattering by ice particles are all exploited for sensing various layers of the atmosphere in terms of water vapour content, temperature, molecular composition, precipitating wate...

We consider the routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) in survivable WDM network. A path protection scheme assumed and two different wavelength assignment methods for protection paths are considered. Integer programming formulations of RWA under two wavelength assignment methods are proposed and we devised algorithms to solve them. Test results show that the difference of wavelength requiremen...

Absfrcrcf-In this paper, we propose a method to calculate the average blocking probability in all-optical networks using limited-rmge wavelength conversion. Previous works have shown that there is a remarkable improvement in blocking probability while using limited-range wavelength conversion [2], [3] but these analytical models were either for a path [2] or for a mesh-torus network [3]. Using ...

Planar gratings and holograms are normally readout-wavelength insensitive. We show, however, that a binary phase surface-relief hologram can be transparent at one wavelength (lambda) yet diffract efficiently at another (lambda'), provided that the phase delay is an integer number of waves (e.g., 3) at lambda and a half-integer number of waves (e.g., 2.5) at lambda'. We fabricated a 7.9-microm-d...

We demonstrate a tunable laser frequency comb operating near 420 nm with mode spacing of 20-50 GHz, usable bandwidth of 15 nm and output power per line of ~20 nW. Using the TRES spectrograph at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory, we characterize this system to an accuracy below 1m/s, suitable for calibrating high-resolution astrophysical spectrographs used, e.g., in exoplanet studies.

A l)i planar wiggler has been designed that will be used for the initial operation of the 4-18 GeV storage ring PEP. Three of these wigglers will be installed symmetrically around the ring at 120° intervals in three of six available 5 m straight sections with the purpose' of providing: (1) beam size control to obtain better luminosities below 15 GeV, and (2) decreased damping times to obtain be...

Nowadays, multiwavelength lasers are of great interest for telecommunications and sensors multiplexing. These lasers also have a great potential in the fiber-optic test and measurement of WDM components. The requirements for such optical sources are: a high number of channels over large wavelength span, moderate output powers (of the order of 100μW per channel) with good optical signal to noise...

We propose a type of photonic-plasmonic antennas capable of focusing light into subwavelength focal point(s) at several wavelengths, which are formed by embedding conventional dimer gap or bow-tie nanoantennas into multiple-periodic gratings. Fano-type coupling between localized surface plasmon resonances of dimer antennas and photonic modes in the gratings adds new functionalities, including m...
