The aim of this study was to determine the association of bleeding as a complication of warfarin therapy with polymorphism of CYP2C9 gene (alleles 1, 2 and 3). The CYP2C9 is the main enzyme for warfarin metabolism. Study included 181 patients receiving warfarin for at least one month. Allele 1 of CYP2C9 gene (in 94.5%) and genotype *1/*1 (57.5%) prevailed. Allele 3 was found in 12.7% patients. ...

A case is reported of a baby born with congenital abnormalities due to maternal ingestion of warfarin during pregnancy. Warfarin is known to be teratogenic, producing characteristic abnormalities, namely a hypoplastic nose, stippled epiphyses, and skeletal abnormalities. A variety of ocular abnormalities have been reported. Ophthalmologists should seek a history of maternal warfarin ingestion w...

Chronic dialysis patients frequently present with necrotic skin lesions. The differential diagnoses are broad and complex. The main focus of this paper is differentiating features of two diagnostic entities: Warfarin induced skin necrosis and calciphylaxis as early recognition and treatment may prevent the significant mortality. We discuss a case involving a hemodialysis patient, who developed ...

Background—Patients with acute ischemic syndromes (AIS) suffer high rates of recurrent ischemic events despite aspirin treatment. Long-term therapy with oral anticoagulants in addition to aspirin may reduce this risk. We studied the effects of long-term warfarin at 2 intensities in patients with AIS without ST elevation in 2 consecutive randomized controlled studies. Methods and Results—In phas...

Background: The combination of antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy significantly reduces the rate of thromboembolic events in patients with heart valves compared with anticoagulant therapy alone. Costeffectiveness of this therapy in Egypt, however, has not yet been established. Objective: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the combined use of warfarin and ...

AIMS The demand for oral anticoagulant therapy will continue to increase in the future along with the aging of the population. This study aimed to determine the rate of bleeding requiring hospitalization and to characterize early bleeders among persons initiating warfarin therapy. Characterization of those most susceptible to early bleeding is important in order to increase the safety of warfar...

Skin reactions associated with oral coumarin-derived anticoagulants are an uncommon occurrence. Leukocytoclastic vasculitis (LV) is primarily a cutaneous small vessel vasculitis, though systemic involvement may be encountered. We report 4 patients with late-onset LV probably due to warfarin. All 4 patients presented with skin eruptions that developed after receiving warfarin for several years. ...

Long-term anticoagulant therapy with warfarin is part of standard therapy for several disorders commonly present in patients seen in hospice and palliative care programs. Yet warfarin is also the drug most implicated in adverse drug reactions and its risks rise with increasing age and comorbidity. Clinicians caring for patients with multiple comorbidities or a limited life expectancy often are ...
