Individual differences in cognitive flexibility may underlie a variety of different user behaviors, but a lack of effective measurement tools has limited the predictive and descriptive potential of cognitive flexibility in humancomputer interaction applications. This study presents a new computerized measure of cognitive flexibility, and then provides evidence for convergent validity. Our findi...

Flow injection analysis (FIA) has emerged as an increasingly used laboratory tool in chemical analysis. Employment of the technique for on-line sample treatment and on-line measurement in chemical process control is a growing trend. This article reviews the recent applications of FlA. Most papers refer to on-line sample treatment. Although FIA is very well suited to continuous on-line process m...

In this paper we advocate the development of transdisciplinary educational programs with a strong focus on HCI, which use problem based learning (PBL) as a teaching methodology. We describe a novel education called Medialogy, developed at Aalborg University Copenhagen in Denmark, outlining through different case studies how PBL supports transdisciplinarity.

This paper presents work conducted towards the automatic recognition of negative emotions like boredom and frustration, induced due to the subject’s loss of interest during HCI. Focus was on the basic pre-requisite for the future development of systems utilizing an “affective loop”, namely effective recognition of the human affective state. Based on the concept of “repetition that causes loss o...

The evaluation of a program’s behavior in the presence of transient faults is often a very time consuming work. In order to achieve significant data, thousands of executions are normally required and each execution will have the significant overhead of the fault injection environment. Our previously published methodology reduced significantly the time needed to evaluate the robustness of a prog...

In the current work, we introduce Applab as a pedagogical framework and a transdisciplinary design approach to innovate HCI education. Students do not work for a client, but work together with urban stakeholders to better frame the problem in order to deal with societal challenges. In this way, Applab embraces design thinking as an approach to leverage a crossdisciplinary collaboration between ...

When adversity strikes, when mental and physical functioning and health are at risk, humans ‘fight back’. Humans come with and develop a set of adaptive processes that gives them the potential to fend off disaster, to reshape challenges and to transform stressful experiences into psychological growth. Coping describes some of these adaptive processes (Coelho et al., 1974; White, 1974). Research...
