Acquired vancomycin resistance in Gram-positive anaerobes has been reported only in Australia and Canada from rare vanB-positive stool samples in the absence of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE). We report the emergence of VanB-type resistance in Clostridium clostridioforme and Atopobium minutum involved in human infections in France.

The VanA ligase encoded by the vancomycin resistance plasmid pIP816 of Enterococcus faecium BM4147 condenses D-alanine with various D-2-hydroxy and D-2-amino acids in vitro. D-Lactate added to the culture medium restored the vancomycin resistance of a strain that does not produce the VanH dehydrogenase and therefore appears to be a substrate of VanA in vivo.

In this paper, we present a draft genome sequence of a quality control reference strain, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 51299 (multilocus sequencing type [MLST] ST6), which is sensitive to teicoplanin but resistant to vancomycin. It is used in an agar screening test for streptomycin, gentamicin, and vancomycin resistance and the resistance marker vanB.

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) were detected in two faecal samples (1.3%) of song thrush in Portugal. vanA isolates showed high level vancomycin/teicoplanin resistance, as well as resistance to ciprofloxacin, quinupristin-dalfopristin and cloranfenicol. Thrush can be a reservoir of VRE and transmit these resistant bacteria to other animals including humans.

The efficacy of treatment with a combination of ampicillin, imipenem, and vancomycin was compared with that of two-drug combinations or monotherapy in a model of experimental endocarditis using a strain of Enterococcus faecium with high-level resistance to vancomycin and moderate intrinsic resistance to ampicillin and imipenem. In vitro time-kill synergy studies demonstrated bactericidal synerg...

In Enterococcus faecium 228, vancomycin resistance is encoded on a 55-kilobase conjugative plasmid, pHKK100. This plasmid was transferred with high frequency into susceptible strains of Enterococcus faecalis and conferred responses to pheromones produced by E. faecalis and Streptococcus sanguis. pHKK100 is the first plasmid described that mediates both vancomycin resistance and pheromone response.

We report characterization of a methicillin-susceptible, vancomycin-resistant bloodstream isolate of Staphylococcus aureus recovered from a patient in Brazil. Emergence of vancomycin resistance in methicillin-susceptible S. aureus would indicate that this resistance trait might be poised to disseminate more rapidly among S. aureus and represents a major public health threat.

Vancomycin resistance in enterococci is an increasing clinical problem, and several phenotypes have been identified. We demonstrate here that the resistance mechanism in the constitutively vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus gallinarum BM4174 involves an altered pathway of peptidoglycan synthesis and hydrolysis of the normal precursors in the vancomycin-sensitive pathway. A ligase encoded by the ...

Vancomycin is a member of the glycopeptide class of antibiotics. Vancomycin resistance (van) gene clusters are found in human pathogens such as Enterococcus faecalis, Enterococcus faecium and Staphylococcus aureus, glycopeptide-producing actinomycetes such as Amycolotopsis orientalis, Actinoplanes teichomyceticus and Streptomyces toyocaensis and the nonglycopeptide producing actinomycete Strept...

The incidence of resistant gram-positive bacteria in nosocomial and, more recently, community-acquired infections is increasing. Staphylococci, because of their natural habitat on the skin, have always been the leading cause of peritonitis in patients receiving peritoneal dialysis (PD). These organisms have demonstrated a remarkable ability to develop resistance to antibiotics, first with penic...
