This chapter surveys formal models of endogenous alliance formation in political science and economics. Using a unified model of conflict, we obtain general results on the effect of group sizes on conflict and on the size of stable alliances. We also discuss recent work on endogenous sharing rules and dynamic alliance formation in nested conflicts. JEL Classification Numbers: D74, D72, C72
The reconstruction of a shape or surface from a finite set of points is a practically significant and theoretically challenging problem. This paper presents a unified view of algorithmic solutions proposed in the computer science literature that are based on the Delaunay complex of the points.
The basic assumptions and the general results of our bag model for nuclei are presented in detail. Nuclei are considered in a unified integration of the mean field theory and the MIT bag model. Present Address: Institute for Nuclear Science and Technique, Hanoi, Vietnam.
Power laws, such as Zipf s law, and exponential relations, leading to straight lines in logarithmic or semi-logarithmic scales, are presented in a unified setting. It is shown that the class of size-frequency power laws is larger than the class of rank-frequency power laws. Their ubiquity in all fields of science is illustrated.
In terms of the notion of a specific class of ranked semilattices, called regular quantum matroids, we prove the Erdiis-Kc-Rado-type results in a unified way for the association schemes J,(n,d) of vector spaces and H,(n,d) of bilinear forms, together with their Delsarte t-designs, respectively. @ 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. This paper is devoted to the comparison of various shape properties of triangular Bézier surfaces and of their Bézier nets, such as polyhedral convexity, axial convexity and subharmonicity. In order to better compare these properties, the different notations used by different authors are unified. It also includes counterexamples for the results that are not true. 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. Al...
The purpose of this special issue and the conference that inspired it was to address the issue of conceptual integration in a science of consciousness. We felt this to be important, for while current efforts to scientifically investigate consciousness are taking place in an interdisciplinary context, it often seems as though the very terms being used to sustain a sense of interdisciplinary coop...
We have attempted to review the scientific publishing scenario in India as it obtains today. It is directed essentially towards physics journals, though some general observations may be applicable to other fields as well. It is pointed out that though there exist a number of journals in the country, they are more or less of a cover-all generalized complexion, catering to all fields of physics, ...
This paper aims to articulate an anarchist challenge a widespread assumption in the rapidly growing philosophical literature on models, modeling-practices, and model-based science. I argue that various entities practices called “models” “modeling-practices” are too heterogeneous, context-sensitive, serve many scientific purposes roles, as constitute unified phenomena would allow for useful epis...
