The complementary surface techniques of ultra-high vacuum (UHV) ESR and CREMSEE (cyclotron resonance from microwave-induced secondary electron emission) are described_ it is shown in a study of a stable pammagnetic molecule on Cu and Ag surfaces, that it appears to lose its pammagnetism while forming a chemisorbed complex with tbe metal surface. Control experiments on air-oxidned Cu are also pr...

Chromium(III)-based wheels close-pack on the Ag(110) surface forming a quasi-hexagonal 2D network following direct sublimation in ultra high vacuum (UHV). Wheels organization and chemical integrity have been proved through in situ Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) studies.

Experimental data for water adsorption on CVD (chemical vapor deposition) graphene/SiO2 and graphene/Cu studied under ultra-high vacuum (UHV) conditions are discussed, focusing on support effects and hydrophobicity. Under UHV, it seems that graphene wettability is inversely related to wetting properties of the support. Graphene is not transparent to water wetting on the supports studied here.

This paper deals with the morphology and surface chemistry of faceted voids existing in singlequasicrystalline icosahedral Al70 5Pd2i.0Mn8 5. By observation with a scanning electron microscope of surfaces obtained by cleavage of the quasicrystal, the habit planes of the dodecahedral voids were identified. The chemical surface composition of the void surface was determined by Auger electron spec...

On-surface synthesis of tetracyanobenzene molecules with Mn atoms is presented. From metal-organic coordination networks at room temperature, Mn-phthalocyanines and finally small domains of polymeric Mn-phthalocyanines are formed upon annealing on the Ag(111) surface. Step-by-step on-surface reaction is studied in situ by scanning tunnelling microscopy under ultra-high vacuum.

Silicon thin layers are deposited on glass substrates with the thickness of 103 nm, 147 nm and 197 nm. The layers are produced with electron gun evaporation method under ultra-high vacuum condition. The optical Reectance and the Transmittance of produced layers were measured by using spectrophotometer. The optical functions such as, real and imaginary part of refractive index, real and imaginar...

We describe the design, construction, and performance of a 4-circle in-vacuum diffractometer for resonant elastic soft x-ray scattering. The diffractometer, installed on the resonant elastic and inelastic x-ray scattering beamline at the Canadian Light Source, includes 9 in-vacuum motions driven by in-vacuum stepper motors and operates in ultra-high vacuum at base pressure of 2 × 10(-10) Torr. ...

Present knowledge of the function of materials is largely based on studies (experimental and theoretical) that are performed at low temperatures and ultra-low pressures. However, the majority of everyday applications, like e.g. catalysis, operate at atmospheric pressures and temperatures at or higher than 300 K. Here we employ ab initio, atomistic thermodynamics to construct a phase diagram of ...

Atomically flat and clean metal surfaces exhibit a regime of ultra-low friction at low normal loads. Atomic force microscopy, performed in ultra-high vacuum on Cu(100) and Au(111) surfaces, reveals a clear stick-slip modulation in the lateral force but almost zero dissipation. Significant friction is observed only for higher loads (*4– 6 nN above the pull-off force) together with the onset of w...

We evaporated polycrystalline copper thin films of thickness between 10 and 100nm on silicon substrates with their native oxide under ultra-high-vacuum conditions. Some of them were exposed to air for a period ranging from 1 day to 2 weeks. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed a clean copper surface with a trace of oxygen. These films that were exposed to air presented oxides in the ...
