A computational approach is described for helping jazz improvisors create solos. Initial facets of the approach have been embodied in a freely-available software tool called Impro-Visor (”Improvisation Advisor”) which we developed. The paper describes the rationale and some of the computational challenges and issues associated with designing and implementing such a tool.
In this paper, we propose a new design tool for “block encryption”, allowing the en/decryption of arbitrarily long messages, but performing en/decryption on only a single block (e.g., 128 bit block), where the rest of the message is only processed by a good scrambling function (e.g., one based on an ideal hash function). The design can be a component in constructing various schemes where the ab...
The evolution of object-oriented databases (OODBs) has not been accompanied by an equivalent evolution of theoretical models, leaving the foundations for OODBs ill-defined. Design of OODBs has been hampered by the lack of design techniques/tools which correspond to the theoretical model. This paper defines a core conceptual object oriented database (COODB) model providing a foundation and frame...
This paper presents a new approach for intuitively modeling a 3D garment around a 3D human model by 2D sketches input. Our approach is feature based – every human model has pre-defined features, and the constructed garments are related to the features on human models. Firstly, a feature template for creating a customized 3D garment is defined according to the features on a human model; secondly...
This paper presents an assembly model process that fully characterizes the structural and flow interactions between artifacts in a product. Reverse engineering techniques were employed during the analysis of thirty-three existing consumer products to arrive at a concise standardization of the modeling process. During the product investigation, four different types of structural interactions wer...
SDOF analysis is widely accepted for blast design, but many designers are not aware of the large database of available comparisons between results from SDOF analysis and blast test data. This paper collects a large amount of this data, excluding test data that is proprietary or restricted from public distribution, and presents comparisons of SDOF analysis results with test results for different...
This paper presents a toolset for real-time veriication of Statemate 1 designs. Statemate is a widely used design tool for embedded control applications. In our approach designs including all timing information are translated into untimed nite state machines (FSMs) which are veriied by symbolic model-checking. Real-time requirements are expressed by TCTL formulae interpreted over discrete time....
We describe a tool enabling non-professionals to create digital layouts for large-scale graphical virtual environments. The design tool is based on “elements of the city image” as described by the urban planner, Kevin Lynch (1960). These elements serve as both organizational principle and navigational aid. Further work is needed to situate the tool within a virtual environment so that output fr...
This paper describes the process of Science Fiction (SF) prototyping as a design tool. An overview of the SF prototyping process is given, followed by a brisk overview of the relationship between science fictiona dn science fact as see in fiction, movies and comic books. Finally we finish up by discussion a specific SF prototype, the research and writings that fed into the process and the outco...
