CARCINOID OF THE THYMUS IS A RARE PROBLEM A case is reported to add to only 16 previously reported. None of these 17 patients had the carcinoid syndrome. Complete surgical excision, if possible, is the treatment of choice.

BACKGROUND Previously, we reported an association between higher maternal polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) concentrations and smaller thymus volume in newborns in a birth cohort residing in eastern Slovakia. OBJECTIVE In the present report we address whether thymus volume at later ages is influenced by prenatal and early postnatal PCB exposure. METHODS At the time of delivery, 1,134 mother-in...

Bis (Bag3) is known to be involved in cell survival, migration, the regulating of chaperones, and protein quality control. We reported recently on the production of bis gene-deleted mice, which show early lethality within 3 wk after birth with a phenotype showing severe malnutrition and shrinkage of the thymus. In this report, we provide evidence to show that an intrinsic problem of adrenal gla...

Thymic carcinomas are unusual tumors of the thymus gland. Basaloid carcinoma, an unusal epithelioid varient of a thymic carcinoma, is a rare histopathological subtype, and is not well charecterized in the literature. We present the anatomical and histogical features of a basoloid thymic carcinoma, and discuss current diagnosis and imaging strategies, as well as the operative and oncologic care ...

The term polymerase has been applied to the deoxyribonucleoside triphosphate-polymerizing enzyme isolated from Escherichia coli (1). Enzymes with similar activity have been purified from regenerating rat liver (2) and calf thymus gland (3). An ample and varied supply of such polymerases is desirable for studies on the mechanism of deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis. The present work describes a pa...

A case of carcinoid tumour of possible thymic origin in a 43-year-old man is presented. Carcinoid tumour arising in the anterior mediastinum (thymus) is a rare condition and only 26 cases have been reported in the past. A review of the literature showed that three-quarters of the reported cases were asymptomatic but the remainder of patients presented with various endocrine symptoms. Ultrastruc...

Intestinal pseudo-obstruction is considered to be one of the most frequent gastrointestinal manifestations of myasthenia gravis, accompanied by the presence of neoplasia of the thymus gland in the vast majority of the cases presented in the international literature. Despite the fact that myasthenia gravis has been implicated to be the cause of recurrent episodes of intestinal pseudo-obstruction...

The thymus expresses many genes previously thought to be specific for cell types in other organs. Thus, insulin genes are expressed in rare cells of the thymic medulla. Thymus transplantation demonstrates a functional capability of such expression for self-tolerance induction. Correlative studies suggest that impaired thymic expression confers susceptibility to autoimmune disease.

Results are given of genetic studies of male sterility using plants from two natural populations from Sussex, England. Both populations have substantial frequencies of females, approximately 0.25 in population 1 and 0.60 in population 3. As in the few other gynodioecious populations studied in detail, many genetic factors are present. In population 1, there are at least two, and more likely thr...
