A 25-year-old man with a rapidly progressive metastatic carcinoid tumour arising in the mediastinum developed a metastasis to the optic nerve. This is the first instance in the literature of an ocular metastasis from this variant of carcinoid tumour. The ocular pathology, ultrastructure, and recent information on the derivation of this tumour, believed to originate in the thymus, are presented.
cervical thymic cyst is not a common pathology encountered in either an adult or a child. our case presentation is of an infant girl with a right cervical soft mass. it was totally resected and histological analysis revealed a thymic cyst. the diagnosis of thymic cyst is not possible prior to histological examination. therefore, in children the disorder should be considered as a differential di...
A 44-year-old female patient presented symptoms and laboratory data consistent with a Cushing’s syndrome. Endocrine investigations and negative pituitary imaging were suggestive of ectopic ACTH secretion. Therefore, the patient underwent fluorine18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) and somatostatin receptor scintigraphy (SRS) searching for the ...
Carcinoid tumors are rare, slow-growing neuroendocrine neoplasms that often are indolent and may not become clinically apparent until there has been metastatic spread or evidence of carcinoid syndrome. Recent evidence has revealed that the overall incidence of carcinoid tumors has been steadily increasing, and although the disease was thought to be relatively benign, it is now considered one of...
Mediastinal masses in children comprise a heterogeneous group of malignant and benign neoplasms. The majority of malignant tumors of mediastinum are Hodgkins and non-Hodgkins lymphomas, germ cell tumors, and neuroblastomas. Thymic tumors account for 1.5% of mediastinal masses in children [1]. Thymomas, thymic carcinoids, and thymic carcinomas constitute thymic epithelial neoplasms (TEN). Carcin...
Carcinoid is one of the most common tumors of the gastrointestinal tract followed by the tracheobronchial tree. Bronchial carcinoid compromises 20% of total carcinoid and accounts for 1-5% of pulmonary malignancies. Carcinoid can be typical or atypical, with atypical carcinoid compromises 10% of the carcinoid tumors. Carcinoid usually presents as peripheral lung lesion or solitary endobronchial...
Carcinoid tumors are rare neuroendocrine tumors that arise from neural crest amine precursor uptake decarboxylation cells. Most of carcinoid tumors originate in the midgut. The vasoactive secretory products of carcinoid tumor upon metastasis to liver reach systemic circulation as they bypass the metabolism by liver. 50% of patients with carcinoid syndrome eventually develop carcinoid heart dise...
There are three main areas of origin for carcinoid tumors: foregut carcinoid tumours start in the lungs, bronchi, or stomach; midgut carcinoid tumours start in the small intestine, appendix, or proximal large bowel; and hindgut carcinoid tumours start in the distal colon or rectum3. The appendix is the most common site of carcinoid tumors, followed by the rectum, ileum, lungs, bronchi, and stom...
