Platinum(II) terpyridine complexes with glycosylated acetylide and arylacetylide ligands bind to DNA with binding constants approximately 10(5) mol(-1) dm(3); the glycosylated arylacetylide complexes exhibit emission at lambda(max) approximately 620 nm in water and are up to approximately 100-times higher in potency than the clinical cisplatin drug in killing cancer cells.

A novel [2]pseudorotaxane was successfully constructed by the complexation of dibenzo[24]-crown-8 (DB24C8) derivative bearing terpyridine moiety (1) with lanthanide ion (Tb(3+)) and fullerene-containing ammonium salt (2), exhibiting the controlled photophysical behaviors as a reversible luminescent lanthanide switch in the presence of K(+) or 18-crown-6 (18C6).

The interaction specificity of salmon sperm DNA with 2-hydroxyethanethionlato(2,2',2''-terpyridine)platinum(II),PtTS has been studied. The results of 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, flow dichroism and circular dichroism studies are found to be consistent with an intercalation mode of binding as has been proposed earlier by lippard and coworkers.

Linear supramolecular polymers were obtained in aqueous solution by employing cucurbit[8]uril-based host-guest interaction as the driving force. Water-soluble monomers were prepared through direct metal-coordination. The rigid and bulky terpyridine-Fe linker can effectively enhance the monomer's solubility and suppress its cyclization, thereby promoting supramolecular polymerization.

Tailored triarylamine units modified with terpyridine ligands were coordinated to Zn(2+) ions and characterized as discrete dimeric entities. A strategy is proposed for immobilization of homogeneous catalysts whereby a glassy carbon electrode is functionalized by electro-grafting of a ligand, terpyridine. The modified electrode can easily be metallated with cobalt and shows activity towards catalytic proton and CO2 reduction. The metal can be removed and the electrode re-metallated at will.
