We report an anesthetic experience in a clinically euthyroid patient with hyperthyroxinemia (elevated free thyroxine, fT4 and normal 3, 5, 3'-L-triiodothyronine, T3) and suspected impairment of conversion from T4 to T3. Despite marked hyperthyroxinemia, this patient's perioperative hemodynamic profile was suspected to be the result of hypothyroidism, in reference to the presence of T4 to T3 con...

Effects of short-term administration of corticosterone and cortisol on plasma levels of thyroid hormones, gonado-somatic index and testicular histology have been reported in catfish, Clarias gariepinus during different phases of its breeding cycle. Corticosterone administration had no significant effect on plasma levels of T4, T3 and T3/T4 ratio, irrespective of doses and phases of breeding cyc...

BACKGROUND Thyroid is one of the ductless endocrine gland, which is located immediately below the larynx on either side of and anterior to the trachea. The principal hormones of thyroid gland are thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). The current study was carried out to investigate the impact of race, gender and area on the levels of Thyroxine (T4), Triiodothyronine (T3) and Thyroid Stimula...

This study evaluated the morphological changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condyles and calculated the Helkimo clinical dysfunction index (CDI) in adolescents with Class II Division 1 malocclusion and mandibular retrognathism treated with the Herbst appliance (phase I) and fixed orthodontic appliances (phase II). Thirty-two consecutive adolescents underwent phase I, and 23 completed ph...

Thyroid hormones are essential for brain developat through specific time windows influencing neurogenesis, neuronal migration, neuronal and glial cell differentiation, myelination, and synaptogenesis. The actions of thyroid hormones are mostly due to interaction of the active hormone T3 with nuclear receptors and regulation of gene expression. T4 and T3 also perform non-genomic actions. The gen...

The influence of food restriction, applied from birth to 36 h post partum, on neonatal thyroid function was studied in newborn Limousin x Romanov lambs. The control animals (n = 18) had free access to the mother and suckled ad libitum. Restricted lambs (n = 16) were removed from the mother and received limited amounts of colostrum in proportion to birth weight; 8 lambs were supplemented with la...

SUMMARY In 28 school children with primary hypothyroidism due to iodine deficiency, 100 µg levothyroxine (L-T4} was administered for nine weeks and resulted in normalization of serum T4, T3, and TSH. Five months after withdrawal of L-T 4 , thyroid function was normal in the majority of subjects. Serum T4 was 8.6±2.3 µg/dl ; T3, 156±2.3 ng/dl; and TSH, 6.9± 12.7 µU/ml. Only one subjects showed ...

Thyroid function and serum levels of triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) were investigated in 79 euthyroid geriatric patients. Of the 59 inpatients and 20 outpatients 35 (59%) and 2, respectively, had low T3 levels. In contrast, 7 (12%) and 6 (30%), respectively, had raised T4 levels. Two further patients were excluded from the study because of raised levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone....

We studied the dependence of the free thyroxin (T4) index and the ratio of T4 to thyroxin-binding globulin (TBG) on TBG concentrations, using sera from cases of congenital TBG deficiency and congenital TBG excess. Two such sera with similar concentrations of albumin, transthyretin, and free T4 were mixed to provide test samples with TBG concentrations covering the range of clinical interest wit...
