BACKGROUND/AIMS This study used 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tractography to determine if there was an association between tracts crossing white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and cognitive function in elderly persons. METHODS Brain T2-weighted fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) and diffusion tensor MRI scans were acquired in participants above the age of 60 years. Twenty-...
OBJECTIVES To describe the various presentations and management of piriform sinus tracts in children and to provide a treatment algorithm. DESIGN Case series. SETTING Pediatric otolaryngology service in a tertiary care setting. PATIENTS Eight pediatric patients diagnosed as having a piriform sinus tract between 1999 and 2005. INTERVENTIONS Patients were treated with surgical excision, e...
Previous in vivo studies have indicated that (dT-dC)n.(dG-dA)n tracts (referred to here as (TC)n.(GA)n), which are widely dispersed in vertebrate genomes, may serve as pause or arrest signals for DNA replication and amplification. To determine whether these repeat elements act as stop signals for DNA replication in vitro, single stranded DNAs including (TC)n or (GA)n tracts of various lengths, ...

We present a novel unified framework for explicitly parameterizing white fiber tracts. The coordinates of tracts are parameterized using a Fourier series expansion. For an arbitrary tract, a 19 degree cosine expansion is found to be sufficient to reconstruct the tract with an error of about 0.26 mm. By adding specific periodic constraints to open tracts, we can avoid using the sine basis. Then ...
OBJECTIVE To clarify the clinical usefulness of preoperative fibre-tracking in affected pyramidal tracts for intraoperative monitoring during the removal of brain tumours from patients with motor weakness. METHODS We operated on 10 patients with mild to moderate motor weakness caused by brain tumours located near the pyramidal tracts under local anaesthesia. Before surgery, we performed fibre...
To examine the chromosomal stability of repetitions of the trinucleotide CAG, we have cloned CAG repeat tracts onto the 3' end of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae ADE2 gene and placed the appended gene into the ARO2 locus of chromosome VII. Examination of chromosomal DNA from sibling colonies arising from clonal expansion of strains harboring repeat tracts showed that repeat tracts often change in ...
Crossovers have rarely been observed in specific association with interchromosomal gene conversion in mammalian cells. In this investigation two isogenic human B-lymphoblastoid cell lines, TI-112 and TSCER2, were used to select for I-SceI-induced gene conversions that restored function at the selectable thymidine kinase locus. Additionally, a haplotype linkage analysis methodology enabled the r...
