Supercritical fluid extraction analyses are often compromised by trace impurities present in the solvent carbon dioxide. These impurities, commonly used as lubricants in the specialty gas industry, can produce significant background levels, increasing limits of detection and quantification. This problem is especially severe when electron capture detection (ECD) is used for trace concentrations ...

BACKGROUND Ganoderma lucidum (G. lucidum) is an oriental medical mushroom that has been widely used in Asian countries for centuries to prevent and treat different diseases, including cancer. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of A supercritical-CO2 extract of G. lucidum spores on the transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF-β1)-induced epithelial-mesen...

Hybrid surfactants containing both fluorocarbon (FC) and hydrocarbon (HC) chains have recently been shown to solubilize water and form elongated reversed micelles in supercritical CO2. To clarify the most effective FC and HC chain lengths, the aggregation behavior and interfacial properties of hybrid surfactants FCm-HCn (FC length m/HC length n = 4/2, 4/4, 6/2, 6/4, 6/5, 6/6, and 6/8) were exam...

Recently, refrigerant 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R134a) was considered as an extraction solvent alternative to supercritical fluid CO2. We measured water-liquid R134a partition coefficients of some organic compounds using a high-speed countercurrent chromatography (HSCCC). The experiment could be operated by moderate modification of the commercial instrument. The partition coefficient data were...

An Al(porphyrin) functionalized with a large axial ligand was incorporated into a porous organic polymer (POP) using a cobalt-catalyzed acetylene trimerization strategy. Removal of the axial ligand afforded a microporous POP that is catalytically active in the methanolysis of a nerve agent simulant. Supercritical CO2 processing of the POP dramatically increased the pore size and volume, allowin...

In a research project of EADS Airbus and the TUHH a system simulation of a cooling system is to be realized, using the refrigerant carbondioxid (CO2). The simulation models of the cooling cycle are created using Modelica and the thermohydraulic model library ThermoFlow. Modelica and the model library operate since spring 2000. The project will be finished untill the end of 2002. For the structu...

Chemical catalysis plays an important role in the modern chemical industry. The high demand for the products of industrial catalysis increases the need for development of solvent media that are both economical and environmentally friendly. Previous research efforts have focused on primarily supercritical CO2 (scCO2) and mixtures of scCO2 with other solvents such as acetonitrile, toluene, ethano...

We report draft genome sequences of Bacillus subterraneus MITOT1 and Bacillus cereus MIT0214 isolated through enrichment of samples from geologic sequestration sites in pressurized bioreactors containing a supercritical (sc) CO2 headspace. Their genome sequences expand the phylogenetic range of sequenced bacilli and allow characterization of molecular mechanisms of scCO2 tolerance.

ABSTRACT A platform is proposed for the extraction of nutraceuticals ingredients from natural products, which includes the following three processes: 1. Single-stage extraction using scCO2 (supercritical CO2). 2. Single-stage extraction using of high-pressure hot water and /or hot water with scCO2. 3. Multistage extraction, with counter-currently contact between scCO2 and H2O with the raw mater...
