Model structures are compared by estimating their expected prediction performance on a validation data sequence that is independent of the data sequence used for parameter estimation. Here we show that under reasonable assumptions, this common procedure asymptotically leads to a model with the best possible expected prediction performance within the given model set.

Cadastral topological structure change is the foundation for conducting change analysis, and updating data in Cadastral Information Systems (CIS), and it almost happens every day in many cities. In this paper, we subdivide cadastral structure changes into small structure change and large structure change according the parcels involved in the transition. The classification methodology of small c...

The topological structure of a dynamical network plays a pivotal part in its properties, dynamics and control. Thus, understanding and modeling the structure of a network will lead to a better knowledge of its evolutionary mechanisms and to a better cottoning on its dynamical and functional behaviors. However, in many practical situations, the topological structure of a dynamical network is usu...

Given a finite set {(x~, Yi)} of ordered pairs from X × Y where X, Y are Hilbert spaces over the same field, there are numerous techniques for constructing a function, f, on X to Y such that f(xi) = y¢ • However, when X, 2" have a causality structure and f must be causal then the data interpolation problem is much more complicated. In this paper two interpolation methods, namely linear interpol...

S u m m a r y The paper demonstrates how information on text structure can be used to improve the performance on the identification of topical words in texts, which is based on a probabilistic model of text categorization. We use texts which are not explicitly structured. A text structure is identified by measuring the similarity between segments comprising the text and its title. It is shown t...

[1] This study presents a stochastic inverse method for aquifer structure identification using sparse geophysical and hydraulic response data. The method is based on updating structure parameters from a transition probability model to iteratively modify the aquifer structure and parameter zonation. The method is extended to the adaptive parameterization of facies hydraulic parameters by includi...

Embodiment theory suggests that recurrent processes of sensorimotor activity give rise to cognitive structures. In the case of robots, internal sensorimotor activity generated with physics simulators can be exploited to expand the historical domain of action, however pre-engineered simulations are limited by the reality gap problem. Alternatively simulation might be inferred and self-constructe...

In this paper we prove the so-called “Meek Conjecture”. In particular, we show that if a DAG H is an independence map of another DAG G, then there exists a finite sequence of edge additions and covered edge reversals in G such that (1) after each edge modification H remains an independence map of G and (2) after all modifications G = H. As shown by Meek (1997), this result has an important cons...
