The introduction of a small amount of bounded rationality into a model sometimes has little effect, and sometimes has a dramatic impact on predicted behavior. We call a model robust to bounded rationality if small deviations from rationality result only in small changes in the equilibrium set. We also say that a model is structurally stable if the equilibrium set (given fully rational agents) v...

In this paper structural stability of discrete-time linear random dynam-ical systems is studied. A random dynamical system is called structurally stable with respect to a random norm if it is topologically conjugate to any random dynamical system which is suuciently close to it in this norm. We prove that a discrete-time linear random dynamical system is structurally stable with respect to its ...

The wetting behavior of quenched-condensed solid D2 films has been investigated by means of light scattering. On the substrates used here (graphite and aluminum) molecular deuterium displays triple point wetting and hence dewets in the solid state, provided the temperature is high enough that thermally activated diffusion processes can take place. This manifests itself in a coarse-graining of t...

At a two-fold singularity, the velocity vector of a flow switches discontinuously across a codimension one switching manifold, between two directions that both lie tangent to the manifold. Particularly intricate dynamics arises when the local flow curves towards the switching manifold from both sides, a case referred to as the Teixeira singularity. The flow locally performs two different action...

A structural stability condition is sought for least squares linear prediction methods in the given data case. Save the Toeplitz case, the structure of the normal equation matrix yields no acknowledged guarantee of stability. Here, a new sufficient condition is provided, and several least squares prediction methods are shown to be structurally stable.

The paper " Une théorie dynamique de la morphgenèse " , written by René Thom in 1966 and appeared in 1967 in Towards a theoretical Biology I, published by Conrad Hal Waddington, can be considered as the princeps paper of the catastrophe theory. In this paper Thom declares that embryology and, in particular, Waddington's notions of epigenetic landscape and chreod have been one of his sources in ...

We exhibit a fundamental relationship between measures of dynamical and structural stability of linear dynamical systems-e.g. linearized models in the vicinity of equilibria. We show that dynamical stability, quantified via the response to external perturbations (i.e. perturbation of dynamical variables), coincides with the minimal internal perturbation (i.e. perturbations of interactions betwe...

The goal of this work is to determine classes of traveling solitary wave solutions for Lattice Boltzmann schemes by means of an hyperbolic ansatz. It is shown that spurious solitary waves can occur in finite-difference solutions of nonlinear wave equation. The occurence of such a spurious solitary wave, which exhibits a very long life time, results in a non-vanishing numerical error for arbitra...
