A multicenter preclinical evaluation was conducted to evaluate the performance of two Cepheid Xpert assays for detection of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and S. aureus. Sensitivity was 97.1% and 98.3% for MRSA in wound and blood culture specimens, respectively. Sensitivity was 100% for S. aureus from both specimen types.
ST239-MRSA-SCCmec III (ST239, sequence type 239; MRSA, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus; SCCmec III, staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec type III) is the most predominant clone of hospital-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus in mainland China. We report here the complete genome sequence of XN108, the first vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus strain isolated from a steam-burned ...
1. Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains with diverse genetic backgrounds are emerging in Hong Kong. 2. Intra-familial spread of community-associated MRSA is common.
Transmission of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) between humans and animals is increasingly recognized. We newly document that the transmission of MRSA between human and hamster is possible.
We report the draft genome sequences of three multiresistant Staphylococcus aureus strains of sequence type 247 (ST247). The methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) SA1450/94 is vancomycin susceptible, while the clinical MRSA isolate S. aureus SA137/93A and its spontaneous laboratory mutant SA137/93G are characterized by intermediate vancomycin susceptibility.
BACKGROUND A diversity of virulence factors work together to create the pathogenicity of Staphylococcus aureus. These factors include cell surface components that promote adherence to surfaces as well as exoproteins such as Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), encoded by the luk-PV genes, that invade or bypass the immune system and are toxic to the host, thereby enhancing the severity of infectio...
Multidrug resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MDRS) is a serious threat to hospitalized patients globally and now represents a challenge for public health, as community-acquired infections appear to be on the increase in both adults and children. S. aureus colonization has been shown to be a risk factor for community-acquired and nosocomial infections. A total of 130 subjects from the community an...
A total of 15 of 101 (14.8%) nasal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates exhibited mupirocin resistance (Mup(r)) compared with 1 of 154 (0.6%) methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus isolates. A total of 14 (93%) isolates exhibiting high-level Mup(r) belonged to a single clone. Horizontal plasmid transfer and transmission of Mup(r) strains contribute to a high incide...
BACKGROUND Community acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) is a major global problem. This study attempted to investigate the prevalence of nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains among 360 healthy university students at An-Najah National University, Palestine. For the purpose of comparing the staphylococcal...
With its remarkable armamentarium of resistance and virulence factors, Staphylococcus aureus has emerged as a dominant pathogen causing pneumonia of all classifications. Rates of methicillin resistance are increasing as clinicians struggle to find ways to prevent the acquisition of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and to effectively treat MRSA pneumonia. Community-associated M...
