Constraint technology can be used to extend the functionality and performance of current database systems in a variety of ways. In this paper, we show how to use constraints for the processing of queries that contain user-deened functions. Such functions are a common feature in many extended and object-oriented database applications. By representing knowledge about the functions through constra...

In this paper, the authors present an assessment of the reliability of microarray experiments as well as their cross-laboratory/platform reproducibility rise as the major need. A critical challenge concerns the design of optimal universal reference rna (urr) samples to maximize detectable spots in two-color/channel microarray experiments, decrease the variability of microarray data, and finally...

We present a methodology to perform spatial prediction when measured data are curves. In particular, we propose both an estimator of the spatial correlation and a functional kriging predictor. We adapt an optimization criterium used in multivariable spatial prediction in order to estimate the kriging parameters. A real data example on soil penetration resistences illustrates our proposals.

Component sharing – using the same version of a component across multiple products – is an approach adopted by many assembled product manufacturers to achieve high final product variety with lower component variety and cost. This paper presents a methodology for determining which versions of a set of related components should be offered to optimally support a defined finished product portfolio....

Given the natural variability and uncertainties in long-term predictions, reliability is a critical design factor for water supply systems. However, the large scale of the problem and the correlated nature of the involved uncertainties result in models that are often intractable. In this paper, we consider a municipal water supply system over a 15-year planning period with initial infrastructur...

In the visual cortex, many neurons respond preferentially to one direction of motion. Maps of direction preference vary in appearance between species and cortical areas. We propose that the observed variability in map appearance re/ect the variability in intra-cortical circuits as a consequence of wire length minimization. This hypothesis allows us to bypass a detailed developmental analysis of...

The density and distribution of spatial samples heavily affect the precision and reliability of estimated population attributes. An optimization method based on Mean of Surface with Nonhomogeneity (MSN) theory has been developed into a computer package with the purpose of improving accuracy in the global estimation of some spatial properties, given a spatial sample distributed over a heterogene...

We propose a novel spectral filter optimization algorithm for the single trial ElectroEncephaloGraphy (EEG) classification problem. The algorithm is designed to improve the classification accuracy of Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) based classifiers. The algorithm is based on a simple statistical criterion, and allows the user to incorporate any prior information one has about the spectrum of the ...

Due to the ubiquity of spatial data applications and the large amounts of spatial data that these applications generate and process, there is a pressing need for scalable spatial query processing. In this paper, we present new techniques for spatial query processing and optimization in an in-memory and distributed setup to address scalability. More specifically, we introduce new techniques for ...
