AVATAR is a new architecture for first-order resolution and superposition theorem provers which tightly integrates the saturation loop with a SAT solver (or an SMT solver) to efficiently implement the clause splitting rule. AVATAR employes the SAT solver to pick splitting branches, thus delegating the propositional essence of the given problem to the dedicated solver. This leads to a combinatio...

Physically based modelling of deformable objects has become the most popular technique to model textiles, skin or human tissue. The crucial problem in the animation of deformable objects is the solution of the resulting differential equations. Recently fast solutions have been presented. In this work we will first give a theoretical analysis and then exploit special properties of the system and...

Systems combining an interval narrowing solver and a linear programming solver can tackle constraints over the reals that none of these solvers can handle on their own. In this paper we introduce a cooperating scheme where an interval narrowing solver and a linear programming solver work concurrently. Information exchanged by the solvers is therefore handled as soon as it becomes available. Mor...

We present parallel solutions for direct and fast n-body solvers written in the ZPL language. We describe the direct solver, compare its performance against a sequential C program, and show performance results for two very di erent parallel machines: the KSR-2 and the Paragon. We also discuss the implementation of the fast solver in ZPL, including factors pertinent to data movement.

Previous research has found an association between the acoustic characteristics of /s/ and judgments of the sex typicality of adult men’s voices. The current study examined whether a similar association could be found when children’s voices are used as stimuli. Two sets of productions were used, with either naturally produced /s/ tokens or tokens of /s/ produced by a trained phonetician. Listen...

When search techniques are used to solve a practical problem, the solution produced is often brittle in the sense that small execution difficulties can have an arbitrarily large effect on the viability of the solution. The AI community has responded to this difficulty by investigating the development of “robust problem solvers” that are intended to be proof against this difficulty. We argue tha...
