In the present study, a purified lipase from Bacillus aerius immobilized on celite matrix was used for synthesis of ethyl ferulate. The celite-bound lipase exposed to glutaraldehyde showed 90.02% binding efficiency. It took two hours to bind maximally onto the support. The pH and temperature optima of the immobilized lipase were same as those of free enzyme i.e 9.5 and 55°C. Among different sub...

As a result of the phenylpropanoid pathway, many Brassicaceae produce considerable amounts of soluble hydroxycinnamate conjugates, mainly sinapate esters. From oilseed rape (Brassica napus), we cloned two orthologs of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) gene REDUCED EPIDERMAL FLUORESCENCE1 (REF1) encoding a coniferaldehyde/sinapaldehyde dehydrogenase. The enzyme is involved in the formation ...

BACKGROUND The cell wall polymer lignin provides structural support and rigidity to plant cell walls, and therefore to the plant body. However, the recalcitrance associated with lignin impedes the extraction of polysaccharides from the cell wall to make plant-based biofuels and biomaterials. The cell wall digestibility can be improved by introducing labile ester bonds into the lignin backbone t...

Betulinic acid, oleanolic acid and ursolic acid have been modified at the C-3 position to cinnamate-based esters and in vitro antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37)Ra has been determined. The results indicated that modification of the parent structures of betulinic acid, oleanolic acid and ursolic acid to the p-coumarate and, in the case of the latter two triterpene...

After publication of our recent article [1], it was brought to our attention that an inaccurate observation was made in the Results section. We stated that diff erent concentrations of SF have no eff ect on normal chondrocytes viability. However, Figure 1 demonstrates that SF concentra tions 500 and 1000 μmol/L signifi cantly increase chondrocytes viability compared with the control group. Th e...

Angiosperms represent most of the terrestrial plants and are the primary research focus for the conversion of biomass to liquid fuels and coproducts. Lignin limits our access to fibers and represents a large fraction of the chemical energy stored in plant cell walls. Recently, the incorporation of monolignol ferulates into lignin polymers was accomplished via the engineering of an exotic transf...
