In this paper we examine requirements for an infrastructure that supports implementation and deployment of smart things in the real world. We describe a case study (RFID Chef) where kitchen items and ingredients, equipped with remotely accessible electronic tags, drive an interactive context-aware recipe finder through the use of an event-based infrastructure.
A basic radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag is a small and inexpensive microchip that emits a static identifier in response to a query from a nearby reader. Basic tags of the “smart-label” variety are likely to serve as a next-generation replacement for barcodes. This would introduce a strong potential for various forms of privacy infringement, such as invasive physical tracking and inven...
By embedding information technologies into tangible products a new class of products is created that we call smart products. Smart products use product information in product-centered communication with users. Communication of smart products is handled by dynamic product interfaces. We present a model for QA-based dynamic product interfaces and its implementation DyPI. It is based on a schema-d...
The IEEE Journal of Radio Frequency Identification (JRFID) has the pleasure to host a joint Special Issue collecting extended versions papers coming from two international conferences held in 2022. first is IEEE International Conference on RFID-Technology and Applications (RFID-TA) , Cagliari, ...
Machine-to-machine communications is an emerging technology that realizes a system of networks, wireless or wired, possibly distributed across the world, for transmitting events captured by low-end machines such as sensors and smart meters to high-end applications and/or personal appliances, where the events are translated into meaningful information. It embraces several major research fields i...
The Internet of Things (IoT) technology is being widely integrated in many areas like smart-homes, smart-cities, healthcare, and critical infrastructures. As shown by some recent incidents, like the Mirai and BrickerBot botnets, security is a key issue for current and future IoT systems. In this paper, we examine the security of different categories of IoT devices to understand their resilience...
Due to drastic increase in e-commerce, there is need for real time implementation of light weight cryptographic algorithms to be used in low cost smart devices such as RFID tags, smart cards, wireless sensor network, PDA’s etc .Hummingbird is a latest ultra-lightweight cryptographic algorithm tailored for extreme resource constrained devices having limited bandwidth and processing capabilities....
