The physical and nutritional characteristics of live and killed brewer's yeast slurries and the possible toxicity of intraruminal administration of loading doses of these by-products were evaluated. Dry-matter (DM) percentages of live brewer's yeast slurry ranged from 10.5 to 29.0, and DM percentages of killed brewer's yeast slurry ranged from 14.6 to 18.5. Total crude protein (N X 6.25) percen...

Ammonia (NH) volatilization from intensive livestock production is a threat to natural ecosystems. This study investigated pig diet manipulation by 1% (w/w) benzoic acid (BA) amendment and lowering of dietary electrolyte balance through substituting 1.4% (w/w) CaCO with 2.0% (w/w) CaCl. Urine and feces were collected separately from 24 pigs fed one of four diets (Control, +BA, +CaCl, +BA+CaCl) ...

The mouse was used as a model to determine whether storage of Salmonella dublin in slurry and in broth reduces the virulence of the organism. No reduction in virulence of S. dublin stored in slurry for 36 days or in maintenance broth for 70 days was observed. The disease hazard involved in pasture-spreading of slurry contaminated with salmonellas is related to factors other than virulence.

In this paper, we describe a solid freeform fabrication procedure for human dental restoration via porcelain slurry micro-extrusion. Based on submicron-sized dental porcelain powder obtained via ball milling process, a porcelain slurry formulation has been developed. The formulation developed allows the porcelain slurry to show a pseudoplastic behavior and moderate viscosity, which permits the ...

Slurry ice is a biphasic system consisting of small spherical ice crystals surrounded by seawater at subzero temperature. Its employment was evaluated in the present work as a new chilled storage method for whole European hake (Merluccius merluccius) and compared to traditional flake icing. Different chemical analyses (nucleotide degradation, formaldehyde formation, lipid hydrolysis and oxidati...

The paper presents the different properties of phase change material (PCM) and Microencapsulated phase change material (MEPCM) employed to cold storage/transportation system with a solar-driven cooling cycle. Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) tests have been performed to analyze the materials enthalpy, melting temperature range, and temperature range of solidification. KD2 Pro is used to ...

Volatilization of ammonia (NH3) from animal manure is a major pathway for nitrogen (N) losses that cause eutrophication, acidification, and other environmental hazards. In this study, the effect of alternative techniques of manure treatment (aeration, separation, addition of peat) and application (broadcast spreading, band spreading, injection, incorporation by harrowing) on NH3 emissions in th...

Three different commercially available molasses-based supplements were evaluated for their effects on the performance of preconditioning calves during the fall of 2002. One hundred and forty calves (mean body weight, 465 lb) were randomly allotted to one of four treatments. Treatments offered were: 1) 16% crude protein fortified molasses slurry, 2) 16% crude protein fortified molasses slurry pl...
