We present a case of Aspergillus septic hip arthritis in an immunocompetent patient with undiagnosed recurrent pulmonary aspergillosis who underwent arthroscopic surgery. Biopsy specimens of synovium revealed fungal hyphae, confirming Aspergillus infection. Aspergillus septic hip arthritis can occur in immunocompetent patients, and arthroscopy can be a noninvasive surgical option in these cases.

We report a case of septic arthritis of a native knee joint due to Corynebacterium striatum, a rare and unusual cause of septic arthritis of native joints. The isolate was identified by a combination of phenotypic, mass spectrometric, and nucleic acid-based assays and exhibited high-level resistance to most antimicrobials.

Gram-negative, anaerobic bacilli are unusual organisms to be isolated in cases of acute septic arthritis. We report the isolation of Fusobacterium necrophorum from joint aspirate in a case of acute septic arthritis, which presented 3 weeks after the drainage of a dental abscess.

Septic arthritis of the wrist is rare entity, especially; atypical mycobacterial infection of the wrist is extremely rare. We report a case of septic arthritis of the wrist caused by Mycobacterium intracellulare, which was successfully treated by radical debridement followed by wrist arthrodesis using vascularised fibular grafting.

STUDY OBJECTIVE We determine the proportion of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in adult septic arthritis patients presenting to the emergency department (ED). METHODS This was a cross-sectional retrospective review in 2 urban academic EDs in northern California, one tertiary care and one public. Subjects included patients who underwent arthrocentesis in the ED from April 20...

Anchoring of Staphylococcus aureus surface protein to the cell wall is catalyzed by sortase, a transpeptidase. The contribution of staphylococcal surface proteins to establishment of infection was examined using a murine septic arthritis model. Intravenous inoculation of mice with the sortase-deficient mutant S. aureus strain SMK3 did not result in weight loss or severe septic arthritis, in con...

A 44-year-old diabetic man with isolated septic arthritis of the left acromioclavicular joint (A-C) caused by Staphylococcus aureus is described. He was admitted to the Department of Rheumatology with clinical symptoms of left shoulder arthritis and fever. Laboratory findings showed leukocytosis, elevated levels of erythrocyte sedimentation rate and C-reactive protein, all indicating septic art...

A case is reported of primary late-onset hypogammaglobulinaemia associated with a chronic seronegative, nonerosive arthritis, which was complicated by an episode of septic arthritis due to Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The patient had subcutaneous nodules which have not been regarded previously as a feature of the chronic arthritis associated with hypogammaglobulinaemia. The diagnosis of septic arthri...

Background: Surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy are the cornerstones of treatment protocols in septic arthritis; however, in some circumstances, the diagnosis and initiation of treatment may be retarded by slow disease progression or the time when the patient’s condition precludes early surgery. Therefore, it is beneficial to find ways to reduce the amount of articular injury. This study a...

This study aimed at determining the sensitivity and specificity of Gram staining of synovial fluid as a diagnostic tool in acute septic arthritis. A retrospective study was made of 22 patients who had arthroscopic lavage following a provisional diagnosis of acute septic arthritis of the knee joint. Gram stains and cultures of the knee aspirates were compared with the clinical and laboratory par...
