We examine the relative importance of processes that underlie plant population abundance and distribution. Two opposing views dominate the field. One posits that the ability to establish at a site is determined by the availability of suitable microsites (establishment limitation), while the second asserts that recruitment is limited by the availability of seeds (seed limitation). An underlying ...

PURPOSE To investigate the dosimetric characteristics of the new GMS BT-125-1 125 I radioactive seed, including dose rate constant, radial dose functions, and anisotropy functions. METHODS Dosimetric parameters of GMS BT-125-1 125 I seed including dose rate constant, radial dose functions, and anisotropy functions were calculated using the Monte Carlo code of MCNP5, and measured with thermolu...

Ghana’s seed sector has undergone some significant changes in the past few years, including the establishment of a new seed law and regulations, the appointment of a National Seed Council, and the emergence of a more diversified commercial seed sector. This paper begins by reviewing the principal elements in Ghana’s commercial seed sector. It then examines three factors that will be critical to...

Seeds play a fundamental role in colonization of the environment by spermatophytes, and seeds harvested from crops are the main food source for human beings. Knowledge of seed biology is therefore important for both fundamental and applied issues. This review on seed biology illustrates the important progress made in the field of Arabidopsis seed research over the last decade. Access to 'omics'...

SEED is a 128-bit block cipher with a 128-bit secret key. Since it supports only a 128-bit secret key, it is difficult to apply this algorithm to various environments. In this paper, we propose SEED192/256 which support 192/256-bit secret keys, respectively. Also we evaluate the security these algorithms against well-known attacks and the software performance of them on PC environments.

The importance of infrequent events for both adaptive evolution and the evolution of species interactions is largely unknown. We investigated how the infrequent production of large seed crops (masting) of a bird-dispersed tree (whitebark pine, Pinus albicaulis) influenced phenotypic selection exerted by its primary avian seed predator-disperser, the Clark's nutcracker (Nucifraga columbiana). Se...

Tree reproductive structures-pollen and seed cones, or microand mega sporangia-represent an extremely rich source of food for many animals (166). Although some species exploit pollen cones (189), in this review we deal exclusively with those exploiting seed cones prior to seed dispersal. Insects are considered the most important seed predators during the predispersal phase of seed development ...

Seed traits are related to several ecological attributes of a plant species, including its distribution. While the storage physiology of desiccation-sensitive seeds has drawn considerable attention, their ecology has remained sidelined, particularly how the strong seasonality of precipitation in monsoonal climate affects their temporal and spatial distribution. We compiled data on seed mass, se...

Seed oil content is an important trait of nut seeds, and it is affected by the import of carbon from photosynthetic sources. Although green leaves are the main photosynthetic organs, seed sarcotesta photosynthesis also supplies assimilates to seed development. Understanding the relationship between seed photosynthesis and seed development has theoretical and practical significance in the cultiv...

Strong seed dormancy has been an obstacle for field production of Echinacea species. Previous research on overcoming Echinacea seed dormancy has been extensive and focused on treatment methods, which involve time and expense, and are incompatible with organic production if synthetic chemicals are used. We have attempted to genetically reduce seed dormancy through selection and breeding in Echin...
