SUMMARY Physically based simulation of 10 meter platform dives from the initial stance of a human diver to the splash at water entry. A dynamic model and control system are used to generate the motion of the diver. The dynamics of incompressible fluids and particle systems are combined to produce the splash.
Our view of galaxy evolution has been dramatically enhanced by the recent deep field submm surveys carried out with the SCUBA camera on the JCMT. SCUBA has discovered a population of luminous infrared galaxies at redshifts ∼ 1– 4 that emit most of their energy at far-IR/submm wavelengths. The cumulative surface density of submm sources (∼ 10 deg with S850 > 1mJy) appears to be sufficient to acc...
Methods for microgasometry of a few hundred mast cells are described. The Cartesian ampulla diver technique is used. The sample size is determined by counting the cells within the diver. The respiration rates at 37 degrees C, expressed in microliters per cell per hour, are 0.29 x 10(-6) without substrate and 0.47 x 10(-6) with glucose.
A human diver in the air is an example of a nonholo-nomic system with drift. In this paper, we present a dynamic model of the diver performing planar dives and examine a simple learning approach to the control problem. Finally, we present a proposal for a general, hierarchical, learning controller for systems with many degrees of freedom.
We present radio, optical and X-ray detected counterparts to the sub-mm sources found using SCUBA in the Hubble Deep Field North region (GOODS-N). A new counterpart identification statistic is developed to identify properties of galaxies detected at other wavelengths that can be used to aid counterpart identification. We discriminate between criteria that can use used to pre-select sub-mm brigh...
We proposed a new search heuristic using the scuba diving metaphor. This approach is based on the concept of evolvability and tends to exploit neutrality which exists in many real-world problems. Despite the fact that natural evolution does not directly select for evolvability, the basic idea behind the scuba search heuristic is to explicitly push evolvability to increase. A comparative study o...
The literature on scuba divers' pulmonary oedema (SDPE) is reviewed, especially in its relationship to other immersioninduced pulmonary oedemas. It is concluded that although the three forms induced by swimming, freediving and scuba diving have some features in common, there are significant differences in their demographics, causation and clinical management. The swimming-induced cases tend to ...
Recent concerns about underwater intruder attacks on ships in port and harbour infrastructure raised strong interests in detecting divers. This paper reviews current research and systems on diver detection using acoustic means and the factors affecting system performance. Previous published data on diver acoustic target strength is discussed and seem to be plausibly explained by considering the...
• Review the existing literature on diver visibility. • Carry out experimental determinations of the sighting range of a black disk using DaviesColley’s method together with spectral absorption and attenuation measurements in a wide range of natural optical environments. • Determine the proper wavelength or wavelength combination for the limiting beam attenuation for the horizontal black target...
