Results on the analysis of the hadronic final state in neutral current deep inelastic scattering at HERA are presented; recent results on inclusive single particle distributions, particle correlations and event shapes are highlighted. Invited talk at the Ringberg workshop:“New Trends in HERA Physics” Tegernsee, Germany, 1999
In this work the double vector meson production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is investigated within the BFKL approach. The integrated cross sections and event rates for the processes AA → V1V2AA (Vi = ρ, ω, φ, J/Ψ,Υ) are computed and theoretical estimates for scattering on both light and heavy nuclei are given for energies of RHIC and LHC.
The strong coupling constant αS can be measured in deep inelastic ep scattering by employing various methods. Recent results on the extraction of αS using jet and event shape observables are presented. The results are found to be in good agreement with other more inclusive measurements and the world average value.
After a brief introduction into the phenomenology of instantons, results from instanton perturbation theory applied to deep-inelastic electron proton scattering are summarized. Based on event signatures derived from Monte Carlo studies, strategies for enhancing instanton induced events relative to Standard Model deep-inelastic events are developed. Preliminary results for a search for such even...
A review is given of the latest results on jet production and studies of event shape variables in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. Jet cross sections studies for inclusive jet and dijet events are presented and compared to next-to-leading order QCD calculations. Extraction of the strong coupling constant αs is discussed.
Recent work on leading order multiparton calculations for hadronic collisions is reviewed, with special emphasis on the ALPGEN event generator. Some problems connected with the interface of the partonic events generated via matrix elements with the showering are addressed. We discuss the need to supplement angular-ordered parton showers with a hard matrix element correction, to obtain a complete description of nal states in deep inelastic scattering. This has recently been implemented in the HERWIG Monte Carlo event generator, and we show the results.
We use speckle-visibility spectroscopy to measure the time dependence of bubble rearrangement events that are driven by coarsening in an aqueous foam. This technique gives the time trace for the average scattering site speed within a prescribed volume of the sample. Results are analyzed in terms of distributions of event times, event speeds, and event displacements. The distribution of rest tim...
The outcome of molecule-surface collisions can be modified by pre-aligning the molecule; however, experiments accomplishing this are rare because of the difficulty of preparing molecules in aligned quantum states. Here we present a general solution to this problem based on magnetic manipulation of the rotational magnetic moment of the incident molecule. We apply the technique to the scattering ...
We study synchrotron self-inverse Compton radiation from a reverse shock fireball. If the inverse Compton process dominates the cooling of shocked electrons, an X-ray flare produced by the first-order Compton scattering would emerge in the very early afterglow phase, with the bulk of the shock energy radiated in the second-order scattering component at 10–100MeV. The dominance of inverse Compto...
