Since Ehrlieh and Morgenroth (5) first published their famous horror autotoxicus concept hundreds of observations have been made supporting the idea that the formation of deleterious antibodies against an organism's own antigen is an exceptional event, if possible at all. Investigations on human ABO blood groups have furnished the best. known example of obedience to the biological principle of ...

The photodynamic action of dyes upon biological systems has been reviewed by Blum (1941). Inactivation of bacteriophage by this process has been studied by Clifton (1931), Perdrau and Todd (1933), Burnet (1933), Morales (1941), and Pacheco and Morales (1941). More recently, Welsh and Adams (1954) and Yamamoto (1956, 1958) investigated the kinetics of photodynamic inactivation of coliphage. In t...

Q fever has been described for the first time in 1935 as an outbreak of fever in workers of a slaughterhouse in Brisbane, Australia (Derrick, 1937). Derrick could not identify the aetiological agent therefore he defined the disease as “query fever”. Afterwards, in 1937, Burnet and Freeman (Burnet & Freeman, 1937) isolated a troublesome intracellular pathogen from mice inoculated with blood or f...

The definitions of these matroids, with a summary of their interesting properties, can be found in the Appendix. Except for P"8 , they were all known to be excluded minors for GF(4)-representability (see Oxley [15, 17]). The matroid P"8 is obtained by relaxing the unique pair of disjoint circuit-hyperplanes of P8 . Ever since Whitney's introductory paper [28] on matroid theory, researchers have...

We prove upper and lower bounds on the size of the largest square grid graph that is a subgraph, minor, or shallow minor of a graph in the form of a larger square grid from which a specified number of vertices have been deleted. Our bounds are tight to within constant factors. We also provide less-tight bounds on analogous problems for higher-dimensional grids.

A minor-closed class of graphs is a set of labelled graphs which is closed under isomorphism and under taking minors. For a minor-closed class G, let gn be the number of graphs in G which have n vertices. The growth constant of G is γ = lim sup(gn/n!) . We study the properties of the set Γ of growth constants of minor-closed classes of graphs. Among other results, we show that Γ does not contai...
