We report a case of an elderly patient with a limited form of Wegener granulomatosis, which simulated the clinical and imaging features of organizing pneumonia. Here we call attention to this atypical case presentation that eloquently illustrates the many faces of Wegener granulomatosis.
PURPOSE To summarize the literature on the clinical utility of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (c-ANCA) as a diagnostic marker for Wegener granulomatosis. DATA SOURCES A structured literature search was done using MEDLINE; this search, combined with a manual search, yielded 747 articles for potential inclusion. These articles passed through a 4-stage review. Studies were included if they ...
Introduction: Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA; also known as Wegener’s granulomatosis) is a primary systemic vasculitis involving the ear, nose and throat system (ENT) and lower respiratory tract. Because of the lack of knowledge regarding the clinical findings of GPA due to the limited number of studies, the current study was designed to investigate the prevalence and nature of the otolo...
Circulating IgG autoantibodies that produce cytoplasmic immunofluorescence staining of ethanol-fixed normal neutrophils have recently been found in a large percentage of patients with active Wegener's granulomatosis. Such autoantibodies are rarely found in other diseases and are therefore virtually diagnostic of Wegener's granulomatosis. The nature of the neutrophil antigen defined by these aut...
BACKGROUND Although gastrointestinal involvement in patients with granulomatosis with polyangiitis is uncommon, it is associated with mild to severe life-threatening complications. We present a case of pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis in a patient with granulomatosis with polyangiitis that was treated successfully with hyperbaric oxygen. CASE PRESENTATION A 70-year-old Japanese man with a 3...
INTRODUCTION Granulomatosis with polyangiitis poses a significant diagnostic dilemma due its diverse presentations. Seemly isolated sites of disease, such as oral ulcers, may present to physicians working in primary care settings, the emergency room, and subspecialty fields as well as to dentists. Oral presentations are particularly challenging to identify and require a high index of suspicion ...
The authors present four cases of Wegener's granulomatosis patients with multiorganic manifestation forms, but with a prevalent involvement in upper-airway. Granulomatosis diseases of the nose include bacterial infections (rhinoscleroma, tuberculosis, syphilis, lupus, and leprosy), fungal infections (rhinosporidiosis, aspergillosis, mucormycosis, candidosis, histoplasmosis, and blastomycosis) a...
