In this contribution we present the first diffractive optical elements for soft x-ray differential interference contrast microscopy. Due to an improved calculation method the nanofabrication accuracy of these optics is the same as for comparable normal zone plate optics with the same outermost zone width. Different diffractive optical elements were fabricated with outermost zone width of 100 nm...
In this paper the development of system-level optical models that can be used e.g. for simulating entire laser projection systems is presented. After a short motivation ray optics as the simplest theory of optics is introduced. For the general case of tracing non-meridional rays in 3-D space the vector forms of the law of refraction and the law of reflection are provided, which lend themselves ...
We report on recent progress with development of astronomical X-ray optics based on bent Si wafers. Recent efforts with Si wafers have been focused on new forming technologies such as method of deposition of thin layers. The role of substrates quality in performance of final mirror arrays, as required by large future space X-ray astronomy experiments was also studied.
We present the x-ray optical design of the soft x-ray materials science instrument at the Linac Coherent Light Source, consisting of a varied line-spaced grating monochromator and Kirkpatrick-Baez refocusing optics. Results from the commissioning of the monochromator are shown. A resolving power of 3000 was achieved, which is within a factor of two of the design goal.
We describe an extension to the Geant4 software package that allows it to be used as a general purpose X-ray tracing package. We demonstrate its use by building a model of the X-ray optics of the XMM-Newton, calculating its effective area, and comparing the results with the published calibration curves.

We report recent work on segmented glass optics for the Constellation-X Hard X-ray Telescope. This effort seeks to both improve the figure of the free-standing glass substrates, and to refine a newly-developed mounting technology for the substrates. We discuss metrology on recently characterized glass shells both unmounted and mounted. We also present plans for several prototype optics to be co...
An international workshop on metrology for X-ray and neutron optics, the first of its kind, was held March 16-17, 2000, at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. Engineers and scientists from around the world met to evaluate current metrology instrumentation and methods used to characterize the surface figure and finish of long, grazing-incidence optics used in synchrotron r...
